Thanks

alfalfa hay is pretty good...sometimes they will hit a corn feeder.
other than that, no calls, bait or scents work.
in the spring time they love to eat lab-lab and clay iron peas, i know that for a fact. you just have to plant it
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Being a chemist, I am tempted to try making my own scent lure from tarsals, pee, estruous sectretion from a hot doe.
I havent found any commercially availbale Axis scents.

+1 I've harvested three Axis so far this fall-alfalfa hay is like candy to them, especially in cold weather. Just stay well back-these guys have built-in radar!

What if you don't bait? How do you hunt them? Free-range Axis are tough to pattern-they seem to change their habbits every few days, usually about the time you're getting on to them

I have heard that the Primo's hoochie mama elk call can be used to cal them if it is pushed fast to make it sound like an axis doe. I am gonna try it and see.

They are found pretty much throughout the southern and central Edward's Plateau-very common in Kerr, Kendall, Bandera, and Comal counties (among others). They are limited somewhat by cold winter weather further north.

Free-range Axis are tough to pattern-they seem to change their habbits every few days, usually about the time you're getting on to them You got that right! Axis move NON STOP it seems and only bed down for short periods. The Axis is one of the hardest animals to hunt in Texas, IMO. The only way we have shot them has been by 100% chance/luck. We've tried hay, pellets and corn with ZERO luck. We've also logged kills with moon phases...but no pattern so far.

I have killed 3 axis bucks this year....low fenced Kerr County. I stalked two of them to their bedding area off an oat field....the next afternoon I killed one from the oat field.
The axis don't come to corn like whitetails....but they seem to hit grain fields harder than whitetails.

Alfalfa is like crack to Axis. They seem to find it quick and a small group of 5 to 7 will dust a square bale of it in a day and night.

Thanks for the help We will have alfalfa out for sure. I bought the hootchie mama call to try. I am also going to put out some experimental items in cas they come in and I can observe them eating the items. Might try some alfalfa pellets mixed with local honey, split apples, organic peanut butter etc. If I can shoot a hot doe I will make some scent lure too.

An Axis is what you would get if you transplanted a pronghorn's eyes onto a smart old whitetail buck!

# 1 on alfalfa. They love it. I hunt them in Rocksprings every year. They are very hard to pattern. Just take a whitetail senses x 10. Good eyes, very good nose, good hearing. I like to get back on a good vantage point, glass for them, then put the stalk on. If you are just meat hunting, I've heard spotlighting at night is legal since they are exotic (non-native). Better check with local authorities first. They will come to corn, just not that great or consistent. The funnest way is spot & stalk if you have enough property to cover a lot of ground.
