Morning guys

Just got back from hunting the Katy prairie and I shot my first Pintail ever this morning. This is my first year hunting in Texas and coming from the timber of South Arkansas, Pintails are virtually non exsistant...so I'm pumped. He's already in the freezer with a date with the taxi.

We hunted the Katy Prairie yesterday and saw quite a few pintails, but they didn't want anything to do with us. Never even turned any.

I have always wanted to shoot a Pintail....congrats to you, I am jealous! If I ever mount a bird that will be the one.

I saw a few before the split and couldn't get them to decoy for nothing. This guys worked like a dang mallard though. He circled and I hit him with the call. He circled about 3 times and got lower every time. He was about to land way out in front of me and I hit him with a couple of soft, short quacks and he picked up and cruzied right to me and the headed for the decoys. He was over the decoys and turned the left to sit down and BAM!!!!! Folded him and he hit the water stone cold dead. Made my year right there!!!

I'm thinking he is a juvie though. His feet arn't blue like the ones I have seen mounted before. Is that a trait of a adult Pinner?

i'm not sure man but the purple on his wings is sweet. Most i have seen are green or brown. Make sure you show that color off when choosing a pose.

the purple is due to lighting....same with a mallards looking green, blue, and violet in different lighting...the bright blue you see on most mounts is way over played...bright blue is on their bills, not their feet. The bird you have isn't the most mature, but definitely not a first year bird IMO

Shouldn't a mature bird have a little different coloring on the speculum?

As already said, the weird color is just due to the cloudy lighting. Get it in the direct sun, and you'd see it normal. The tail is the only thing lacking, nice bird! We've already shot a half dozen up here, there's alot more over here!

HOU, we would kill some in the delta east of Hamburg on rice fields, and there was a few days that we coulda filled a pit blind level full with them. Very habitat specific. But one day in Overflow, a HUGE group of flight ducks came down, about 1500, half pintails. Actually killed a fully plummed drake pintail in the flooded oaks. It was the stragest thing. And awesome seeing that many ducks busting through the trees. They covered the entire slough that we were flooded off of.

Sweet! I've only heard of one pintail ever being killed in Felsenthal and that was a few years ago. I knew I would have to hit the rice fields to get one, fortunatly, they're all around me now!! I love the area west of Houston and Katy...awesome, as I get to kill all the ducks that I don't in Arkansas.

I know! We probably shot like 3 widgeon in AR, I've killed more than 60% widgeon this year! Except one year on this lease we had south of the felsenthal dam, we had widgeon on there all year. 4-5 a day. Not one the year before, not one the year after. It was strange. Dad and I killed over 100 widgeon that year.

I've been getting a chance at a sprig pretty much everyday. Need to hit some of these lakes for a can and a redhead. I do wish I could shoot some more green tho, nothing like it! Got them around, they are just being tough to decoy. Their favorite spot is off of my property. Getting a few, and they react alot better to the call, I think it's because these ducks haven't been past the RNT shop. HAHA.

Good looking bird. Both me and my buddy got our first pintails this weekend. Man there were alot down it seemed like. I had plans for mounting my first also but the shot completely tore up his guts.

If it's not too late, tore up guts isn't a huge issue, you can just chose a pose that hides the belly if it's too bad. I wish I had some of my first ducks. I have my first timber greenhead, and my first band, but I really wish I had my first duck ever.
