Hey everyone,
I grew up hunting ducks in Arkansas my whole life. I had a lease right outside of stuttgart up until I moved to Dfw 4 years ago. It wasn't a matter of limiting out, it was a matter of how many greenheads we would kill, and looking for jewelry on their feet. I have been blowing a duck call since I can remember. I moved here in the 8th grade with no connections to go duck hunting at all until one day I was blowing a call in bass pro. They guy (now my friend) invited me to go hunting. Well that was fun for a while but we still never really killed to many. We had one good season since I moved here when the water was really low on Lewisville. Now I'm in college and tired of hunting on the sides of these huge lakes. I know people dont like to tell their spots and stuff but can anyone tell me if there's any good WMA's or anything around. I've looked everywhere and haven't had much luck. What about the red river? Whats it like out there? Does it ever flood any marshes or timber? Any information would be a lot of help and greatly appreciated, I know I'm asking a lot!

Your asking very broad questions. You never said what area you where going to college in.
Red river it is historically one of the largest wintering grounds for Mallards in Texas. It runs from Childress to Texarkana. yes it floods. It can be hard ot get to with out a boat.
Yes there are WMA's in Texas some of them can be great hunting. They are all over crowded.
Pick up lake maps, get in your truck, and drive drive drive. It will take years to have the amount of spots that I have. My truck has close to 330,000 miles on it. It haas seen almost every lake from Lubbock to Paris.
The more you look the more spots you find. But I assure you. You aint gettin anything off this website exept general awnsers. Oh yeah and probably a few smart arz awnsers as well.

Honestly all I can say is you're gonna have to get used to it. If you're used to shooting greenheads in flooded timber that ain't really gonna happen anywhere in TX on public land anyways. Best thing you can have around here imo is a boat. You can get to so many other places that walkins can't. Good luck to ya and keep scouting. There should be plenty of birds to find now.

That makes three misplaced arkies! HOU Razorback is another. At least I was able to make it through college before I moved, just came in this summer. Still haven't ventured to the public lakes yet, been busting enough on some private ponds on a lease to keep me occupied, and none of the public land I have scouted has looked worth my time. Plus I didn't get a lewisville permit in time, so that's out.

I wish I could help you but I live down in Houston and we hunt flooded rice fields and the coastal areas. Mainly, we hunt rice field. Southeast Texas and the Houston/Katy area are about as close to Stuttgart as your going to get as far as rice fields go. We have some good success as I joined a lease down here for a little of nothing in terms of the amount of places we have to hunt. Good luck and if your ever in the area, let me know. Like you and 007, I came from hunting flooded timber in South Arkansas and I do miss it, but these rice fields sure are fun GO HOGS!!

Thats cool man. Everything in North Texas seems to be open water on lakes. I havent heard of any fields, timber, sloughs, or anything.

best bet is to check on the TPW website at the WMA's and go scout those. Then, find access to the rivers and go scout those. As was said, you need a boat to do it right. Otherwise, drive and drive and hope to get lucky or make some friends. That's about it.

I hunt all of the above and I hunt them within an hour of you in 3 different directions. A stone cold mallard killer like you can simply will them from the skies right?

I am interviewing for a fill in for a duck dog until Roadgoeson's dog is ready...you have to bring treats though... I can flat throw down banana nut bread and Total biscuits.
Lets see you go to school in Denton and you are within 45 min of a huge lake that is fed by a running river and you have lived here for the last 10 years.

Get on google earth while also pulling up lake maps that show legal areas to hunt. Observe both closely. Find (what you think looks like) the duckiest area on the google earth maps. Go scout those places(think of it like a treasure hunt) and if you find gold then awesome...if not, another quest begins...

There are ducks around you just gotta get out there to see them.
I drive into town and i see ducks loaded up on ponds. If you cant have access to private land there are plenty of public opportunities. This second season looks good for duck hunting around here.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but what is there to complain about if you find someone else in a spot that you have scouted? That just means that they have done their homework too. It's your own fault if you get beat to a spot. Wake up earlier, or find a better place that maybe no one else can get to or knows about. Now beating them there and having them set up less than 100 yds. away is a whole nother ball game. Just my

Felsenthal NWR in South Arkansas was my main spot and I also hunted the Steve Wilson/Raft Creek WMA around Searcy once or twice a year.

Iam also from Arkansas stuck in San Antonio, Ive been hunting the coast alot but does anyone have any info on hunting at choke canyon? I fish there alot but have never hunted there. Its a new ballgame in the saltwater, its so hard on your equipment. Theres nothing better than going back home to NE Arkansas and filling a pit full of guys and shooting 60 ducks in a morning.

If you guys are "stuck" here, then tear your a$$ back to Arkansas. Peace out.
And to the original poster...
If you're such a kick a$$ Arkansas duck hunter, why are you asking for spots when there are numerous lakes right around where you live? The fellas on this forum, myself included, have killed thousands of ducks within 50 miles of where you live in the time that you've been here.
Lame.

Lame. I think we touched a nerve! I love Texas, I was born here, my family has been here for the last 7 generations. If I had my way, I'd be in AR for Nov to January, then back in the lone star state for the rest of the year, but my job likes having me siting in that chair for 40+ hours every week. At this point in time, I'm just happy to have a job at all, and I think that y'all should be proud that Texas is able to provide opportunities.
