In my opinion they're not as smart as dogs, porpoises or pigs.Probably about the same level as a horse.I think they can be conditioned or trained like a dog though, especially when it comes avoiding humans.Lots of deer along the river at the Fort Worth Nature Center and you can get quite close to them before they casually walk off, because nobody messes with them. The more deer are harassed and shot at,the more they learn to avoid humans at all cost.

You almost have to raise them to really know. Aint any of them as smart as pigs and poroises. Ive seen traped hog that would grab the door with its mouth and lift it anmd try to get its snout back under the door before it shut . 95% of dogs would die before they figured that out.Ive had some smart horses also but most arent thinkers IMO. But i do beleave deer if left to get old enough arent dumb. Ive seen one learn from the dogs to ask to come in the house and chase trucks and cars and it wasnt over a yr old. It would go to the hose and stomp if there was no water in the dog bowl. Some might be dumb but some aint.

We, as hunters take a purely instinctive wild animal and educate him via pressure and our habits. Instinctive does not mean they have no memory. Think of it as programing. Deer can be damn smart but not all have been subjected to the same "education".

i've shot 4 deer in 4 sits from the same stand and the same deer showed up day after day. when you see that alot of what you've been taught goes out the window
Im guessing the deer that kept coming back were not mature bucks which i think this thread is about...

There not smart but creatures of habit. There sense of smell is amazing and if they sense anything out of the ordinary they are outta there. They'll hit a certain spot for ever until that particular area is not safe anymore.
