Corn to a deer is like a Snickers bar to a human. It tastes great and you want more but there is no long term nutritional value.

yeah, you probably need to use Indian Corn if you want to have some nutritional value.

Corn doesn't really help a animal at all. Like someone said above me it doesn't serve as any nutritional value at all. If you want something that thickens the deer and you know it will be good for them, give them Record Rack protein feed. You don't have to feed them the exact brand of that, but it's just what I use and swear up and down by it.

not sure i agree on it having zero nutritional value. while it may not be the ideal life enhancing food for them, it obviously helps them with energy and fat stores. much like the tortillas at taco cabana do for me when i raised hogs for FFA, the feed we gave them was mostly ground corn and i can tell you they did very well on them. not to mention, have you ever heard of corn fed beef... they dont call it corn fed beef as a negative or because it offers zero nutritional value to a steer. they call it that because it has more marbling (fat) in the muscle and tastes better to most people. so i may be missing something, but i have skinned far too many deer with huge fat stores under their skin in large part to the corn they get from my feeders i am not saying that protein isnt better, only that corn does add value to the deer's diet. the proof is in the results...
Stuff my dad said in the deer blind
"I can dive deeper and come up drier" "did you do that?"

Being from Illinois and seeing dressed deer go over 200lbs, I too find it hard to believe that corn brings nothing to the table. I don't doubt that feeding protein is better, but corn has to be better then a snickers.....

I'm no wildlife biologist, but I don't think the protein content in corn is sufficient to be of any real nutritional value beyond basic subsistence.

Deer like to eat alot of corn as an energy source but it has very little protein, When you corn feed a steer he is penned up in a small place so he cannot burn off the energy at the rate he is eating, therefore he stores it into fat.

Best steak I ever lapped a lip on was in Souix City Iowa. Corn fed beef can NOT be beat. I dont know much about goats but I think deer are in the same family as goats (manure looks alike etc). Might check at the feed store for goat feed cause it might work and will probably be cheaper than anything with "deer" on it. IMHO you probably cant put deer, hogs cattle and people in the same can of worms when it comes to nutrition except for the snickers. We would surly strave to death on a deers diet of mainly browse, acorns, winter wheat etc. Where is the biologist bunch when stuff like this comes up ???

At around 7% protein there is enough to keep the deer alive. For a deer to do more than survive they have to take care of their muscular skeletal system first, after that excess protein goes to the antlers. It normally takes at least 13% to 16% for antler growth.
Corn does not provide copper or calcium or phospherous that arevital to antler growth, nor does it have large volumes of other minerals they need to stay healthy.
Deer are ruminents like sheep, goats and cows, but their digestive system is slightly different and they have other requirements that the other animals don't. Try feeding deer protein to sheep and you will kill them because sheep cannot metabilize copper.
Much of this type stuff can be googled.
