I'm reaching out to you guys for some information. I was not pleased with the whitetail mount I had done from last season. I am currently in the hunt for a reputable taxidermist in or around the Houston area. Anyone have any suggestions?

I was in your shoes last week and I currently have mine at the taxi right now, and i will let you know how it turns out. This is my first time using him, i am getting a euro mount so it is kind of hard to mess that up but i can send you pricing on his other types of mounts.

I don't know your price range or what you consider economical. Alan Palermo in Bryan, TX is very good and worth the drive from Katy (IMO).

I'm realistic about a taxi price. I'll pay for quality, but not an arm and a leg. I just don't like seeing a few stitches in the back of the head....guess I'm asking too much to maybe see a few wrinkles or veins.....also this last mount I got back took almost a year.

I like B&B Taxidermy off of Jones Rd, just north of FM 1960. Been using them now for 5 years. They're not cheap, mind you, but they've always done really good work for my dad and me. I used another taxi prior to B&B (I won't name names) but quit using him because my mounts started coming back with nicks all over the cape and stitches on the back of the neck. Not what I want to see for $500.

i have used Humbird in Alvin before. He is not the best, but decent for the price. he mounted my best buck a few years ago and it still looks good. i would not hesitate on giving him my next whitetail (if i ever get another shoulder mount done). he does all of my skull mounts.

There's no such thing as a good AND economical taxidermist.....you get what you pay for with taxidermy. I'm very picky when it comes to taxidermy. I'd rather pay $500-$700 for a museum quality shoulder mount, than to get a crappy mount for free. JMO

Palermo is not your guy. SWT is asking for value not world class work.
Im not putting down Mr. Palermos work or anything like that, but if someone is looking for good CHEAP work palermo is not the guy.
I dropped him a euro last year due to some time restrictions and what not and I walked out the door paying somewhere around $225 total. Not a good value!

I used to be in the business several years back and got out because you are not going to get rich, and the better you are, you will get snowed under with work, and you can't trust the help you will get, and still be able to charge a reasonable rate.
What always amazed me is the number of people who don't bat an eye to spend thousands for a deer lease, top of the line scopes and rifles, or for that expensive new rig and gear they pull behind that new Suburban, and then haggle over the price for the work, and then expect it back as soon as a couple months.
Like posted above if you want it back within a short time period and expect flawless work, then you will pay for it.
If your looking for a heck of a deal, then you roll the dice, and be happy with what you get!

Thursday at 12:45 PM #33 Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

I don't think $525 is an arm and a leg for a shoulder mount. Is it cheap...no, but not outrageous for the quality you get. I agree $225 for a euro is high, but he asked for shoulder ideas and he said he was willing to pay for quality in his second post

Major Creations in Cypress. David is the contact and they do a hell of a job. Probably not the cheapest or most "economical" though.

David Majors did my very first mount ever and it was the worst one i have ever seen. One eye is looking straight and the oter out to the left. This was years back and I have been using Brians Taxidermy ever since. It is called Brians Taxidermy and he is right off of 249 on Springcypress near Tomball.

I like brush country studios off of barker cypress and grant area. A little expensive but did a great job. My brother had David majors do his, and his is hanging next to mine from brush country studios, mine looks a lot better.

I second B&B. Have used them for years and they do great work, but aren't cheap by any means. But I feel they are a good value (get great work for the $$)
Another option would be Tri-State Taxidermy off of I-10 across from Carter's Country. Small shop that does great work as well. Believe the owners name is Brian?
Having recommended these two shops, I'm also of the opinion that you get what you pay for in most things, including Taxidermy. Have never found one that is good, fast, and cheap. If I'm going to shoot an animal to hang on the wall, then I make sure I'm mentally (and financially) prepared to spend the $$ to get it done right. I owe that much to the animal. Just my opinion....

Brian's taxidermy is junk had a yote mounted and looks like a dog! David Majors work looks good when you pick it up but soon deteriorates one of my buck mounts the skin is pulling off the form and he will do a lot of short cuts. If you want a good taxidermist go see Richard Reeves of Reeves Taxidermy, he is located off Sheldon RD off I-10 East. He also has a web site too you can see my full bodied black bear mount he did for me!

Im too lazy to read all the other posts so this may have already been said. Find a good Taxidermist, and pay what he charges. Economical usually coinsides with less experienced which leads to posts on the taxidermy forum starting with, "How Long Is Too Long To Wait?" Skinner
