I decided to head out a little late this evening-got to my ground blind about 4:00, sat until almost dark-not a thing moving , but got to see a sharp-shinned hawk catch a sparrow, and a caracara perched right above me without noticing I was there. Finally about 5:30 a couple of whitetails came out into the field at the opposite end. I watched them for a while-no shooting since I've been holding out for an axis.

About 15 minutes later, with the light waning, a pair of big axis does walked out of the cedars and split up-one feeding away from me, the other feeding toward me. I eased my Savage 25/06 up slowly, but she was facing directly toward me, and kept coming. At 50 yards she seemed to be getting nervous, so I placed the crosshairs at the base of her neck and squeezed off. she was DRT where she stood! I love my Savage! rifle

Now the pressure's off-one more and I'm set till next fall cheers

Thanks Don. These Hill Country free-range Axis are always hard won-IMO, a mature buck OR doe Axis is a much more difficult quarry than your average whitetail. Their ears and nose are at least as good, but those eyes are WAY better-I've had Axis pin me down at a distance based on a tiny movement no whitetail would have ever noticed.

Another difficulty is that, unlike whitetail, Axis are almost never alone-definite herd animals. You usually have to defeat multiple eyes, ears and noses.

So to me, any Axis is a trophy to be proud of.

GREAT DOE! I hear people say how hard it is to hunt axis and my property has a few herds of them. Never thought I was hunting something that was harder than a whitetail, just harder to pattern. I have taken 3 so far and several times a herd will stop by and eat under the feeder at my sisters house while we are all outside grilling. Now I am kinda proud of myself and every one who takes one. Congrats man!!

Congrats. Axis are delicious and the skins are great! We have them run thru the property now and then. Hard to pattern but I always have the rifle ready and willing.

Had to laugh. Are pictures are almost identical!

Axis taste noticeably better to most people-enough so that my family insists I concentrate on killing a couple Axis before I'm "allowed" to take a whitetail frown

Congrats!!

The meat is like a sweet meat as some folks would say. Yes, much better than whitetail, but have to take what I can get for now.

I may have to try for an axis doe if they are they are that good to eat. I wouldn't mind having one of their hides hanging in my office either.
