I paid $435 for one done in Livingston last year. No board. No plate. They also forgot to age the deer. The mount is smaller than the deer was in life which was kind of disappointing as well. It's my first mount so maybe that's just the way things are.

I found that you can get them from $400 - $600 - what is bad, is the waiting. I agree. You kill a nice buck and get to see him for a day and a half and then he is at the taxidermist for 8-12 months before you see him again. I guess the pictures will have to work until you get him back. I know how you feel.

most quality guys will be from $425 to $550 here in SA.
i get charged $425 and my heads are nice.
If you pay $250 for a mount it will look like a $250 mount...whats already been shown here proves that.

We charge $465 for a WT shoulder with a turn a round time of about 6 months, somewhat longer towards the end of the season. All capes are being send off to the tannery to be done professionally and we don't skimp on anatomical correct detail work. I know no one wants to wait months on end for their mount to be done, but keep in mind there is a reason why someone is 6 month to a year out. Usually they have a large clientele and that comes from doing good work (unless it's extremely cheap, but those are usually not around in a couple of years).
In taxidermy it is like with most everything, beware of the low low prices. Now if a part timer is not interested in making money off the mounting, by all means he can produce a mount for under $300, but full time professional businesses cannot do that. The going rate for a QUALITY mount is $400 on up.
I highly suggest not to consider price as the number one factor in having your deer done by that shop. Do your homework prior to dropping off any trophy. Afterall, that mount will hang in YOUR house for a very long time, and do you really want to look at a bad mount that will pi$$ you off for years only because it was done cheap?

Those $250-$300 mounts that Sully has look awesome to me. In fact, they look better than some of those more expensive ones I have seen on here.
Txtroph85, what do you see that makes them look cheap?
I think a lot of y'all forget that some people don't have half of their mortgage payment to pay for a trophy mount. Sometimes cost IS the biggest factor.

$6-700 is what the top (contest quality) guys are getting now. Are you refering to Palermo's? Or someone else? Allen does outstanding work, and I believe he does fall in that price range. He doesn't do my work, but one of his proteges does. I have been slowly trying to learn about the trade myself. Working on mastery of some of the more mundane steps right now. Yes he does. The best I have personally seen. With a lot of the mounts that I see from the inexpensive guys there is a lack of detail in the mount. Each bit of detail takes time and the more time well...more money. I plan to use him for the next deer I take for the wall.

To me, paying a little bit more for the detail is worth it. If you compare ones with detail versus the cheaper ones that seem to be mass produced, you can tell which one that you want to look at for the next 20 years and it is not the ones that are generic and look to be mass produced.

Sometimes cost IS the biggest factor. the one of top looks good, seems to be a better mount. ears could look alittle better the middle one head is small, no definition what soever...it looks "stuffed". ears also look bad the bottom ones head looks really big compared to his neck, ears look real generic, again no muscle tone in his neck. just things you get used to seeing when you look at alot of mounts.

Those will work for me. The second one isn't the nicest mount, but it's my first, so I'll take it.
The third just looks funny in the picture. It was taken with my phone at an awkward angle, so that may have something to do with it.
Either way, the guy has always treated me well, charges an unbeatable price, and generally does good work. I've seen mounts that look much worse.

I have a guy I use in west texas that does amazing work for very competitive prices. And whats great is that his turn around is far and away the fastest I have ever seen. He does a lot of work for bass pro and ripley's so the quality is outstanding! Wouldn't go anywhere else!

Our price is $4OO and the work around the eyes and ears direction is alot better . To keep the head and cape safe buy a large cheap styrofoam ice chest place it inside and take lid and carve around where antlers are only thing sticking through . Then place all inside large plastic bag and place a bag of ice in bottom of chest with bag and hide on top to stay dry and refit lid around antlers and heavy tape all cracks and openings on lid to where its sealed and tight . jcgilleystaxidermy@gmail.com in Springtown Tx

THE BEST PLACE I HAVE SEEN and best price is $350 in weimar texas by a guy named Ronnie/Ronald Stock. This guy works full time at a tannery and tans hides/rugs so he also tans his mounts which alot of people DONT DO. HE does taxidermy on the side. I have 2 mounts both cost $350, the one that wasnt tanned looks terrible next to the one that was. I will never change taxidermist, he is also my land neighbor so thats good. The good one i got also had half the turn around time and the detail is amazing. THIS GUY JUST DOES AN AWESOME JOB. and for $350 u cant beat it.

Always be carful about how mounts look in pictures!!!!
The guy I had do my first deer (a big 12 point) had lots of great looking pics to show me.
Got it back and the ears are crooked, eyes are very poor and there were dead ticks still in the cape. ....all for $225.00
I now use a good Taxidermist in oklahoma that does great work for $300 a head (low over head out of his house)
But I will agree that you get what you pay for, after all my first one was for $225.00 now all i have to do is kill a buck with a good cape, take the cape and bad mount in and wait a year for it to be done right.

What's a good turnaround for a mount? I know some guys/gals have to wait about a year for them. I generally have gotten mine back within 12 weeks. I know the guy did about 300 last year, and I got mine back in about 8-10 weeks. It helps to be one of the first ones in.

Sheppards in Llano does all of our work. Turn around is 6 months. He is $425 this year I beleive. He also takes the time to show me around his shop, and see "works in progress", sometimes the behind the scenes work goes unnoticed, and it can be a lot if a hunter doesnt take care of the animal.
He has some great combo work, just finished one of a mountain lion taking down a 150 class buck, one of the coolest mounts ever, no telling what it cost, but if your in Llano, go by and see it.
The big kicker is his euro mounts, on a board, done in two weeks, for $125. Other guys around Llano and Marble Falls want $220 and it takes 6 months. That is just plain crazy.

In my experience, if a guy's turnaround isn't LONGER than 6-9 months, he's probably not worth going to. All of the quality taxidermies have a long list of business, and many repeats.
Expect to pay $400 or more for a good mount. It's worth every penny.
