Does anyone have any good hunting stories from New Mexico and what units you where in? Or the best places you have hunted in the past?

Only been once. September of 2008 in Unit 13. Bow hunting for Mulies. Very thick cover. Hard to glass and find them then put the stalk on. Saw tons of Elk. Few Mulies. Had my chance at a good 8 pt (4x4) but blew it! I was working a trail early in the morning when he stepped out. There was an area that I found where several trails and fresh tracks split a small grove of Pinion trees on the second tier of the mountain. I was getting there kinda late b/c I didn't want to walk in the dark in unfamiliar territory with lions and bears in the area. Anyways, as I was uproaching the ground set-up I had made in a cluster of trees, I stopped to admire the beautiful sunrise over the mountain crest. I set my recurve down to snap a few pics, looked up, and 20 yards up the trail he stepped out, unaware of my presence, and began browsing. He saw me as I slowing knelt to get my bow and was gone. I was sick b/c it was the only opportunity I was given in 5 days of hard, all day hunting. I did enjoy the scenery, and overall experience. Got drawn again this year for Unit 32 but can't go due to lack of funds. Flat broke. However, I will be going again many more times in the future. My brother and I will be making it a tradition. And by the way, No more picture taking during the hunt!

I usually try to get in unit 50,53,49,or 16A-16E. Unit 13 is right above the 16's and that is probably the best hunting in New Mexico. When I go it's usually for Elk with the occasional bear tag. I try to get drawed every year but if I don't I call the private land owners. The scenery is great also.
