Izzy and I just got back from Kansas. We hunted for 4 days. The hunting started out incredible and then got slow towards the end.

It was a fun trip. We got there Tuesday evening and I began hunting Wednesday morning. We found pheasant, prairie chicken, quail, rabbits, and a skunk.

The first day started out great with a pheasant in the first field and a couple of rabbits in the second. After lunch, we were hunting a field and I had just bumped a rooster. Izzy went on point and I move in. I kicked the grass and nothing happened. Izzy was rock solid. I knew something was there so I told her to get it. She did. It was a skunk. She got it good and I guess it decided to stink up everything before it died. I wasn't sure if Izzy had been bitten in the fight, but I thought I should play it safe. I called the vet and he recommended a rabies booster to be safe. On Thanksgiving eve at 5pm the vet in town waited for me and gave Izzy a booster. He talked to me about hunting for 30 minutes and then just charged me $15 for the shot. I was amazed. I expected $100.

I had to give Izzy several baths in 40 degree water. She was happy. The funny part is that we were living out of the bed of my truck. Izzy and I were sharing a couple of sleeping bags. I thought about making her sleep outside, but it was 24 at night. The worst smelling thing is the inside of my truck. It smells like the skunk is in the passenger seat. I thought about burning it while I was there. I actually built a camp fire and parked the truck down wind with the doors open. It still stinks.

Over the 4 days of hunting, we saw more than 50 pheasant (half roosters), 60+ prairie chickens, 30 or so quail, about 10 rabbits, and 1 skunk. This was all on public hunting land and the entire time, we only saw 3 other people hunting birds. We had the county to our selves.

Here are a few pictures of our hunt.

Here is a huge jack rabbit. Izzy is 60 pounds and this thing was as big as her. She had trouble retrieving it.

Pheasant

This is a self portrait. I had to run into the frame. This is my favorite field. I have taken 60% of my birds over the past 3 seasons from this field. It is CRP surrounded by winter wheat and wheat stubble.

Home sweet home. Notice the doors of the truck are open. They were like that the entire trip.

This picture tells how Izzy felt after this field. It was full of stickers and thick brush. We did find quail, rabbits, and prairie chickens in this field though.

Here is a jack rabbit and a prairie chicken. My brother-in-law will eat just about anything.

A couple of Izzy.

Sounds like a great hunt. I'll post the link on the PDJ bb. Those Jayhawkers are having a great talking on their cell phones while in the field, and finding one covey of quail

congrats on the hunt. My neighbors lab pointed a skunk 5 feet in front of me in CRP.I share all my meals with her and carry plenty of treats after that. She did get the worst end of the skunk but slep in my truck on the way home. What breed is Lzzy?

Izzy is a Deutsch Drahthaar.

If any of you dog owners don't know of a good skunk smell remover this is what the vet told me to use. Mix Hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and liquid dish soap. Mix it and immediately coat the dog. Don't get in eyes, nose, or mouth. Let it sit for a minimum of 5 minutes. Rinse off. This took the smell out of Izzy, but not out of her collar or my truck.

I am ready to go back. I want to do a long hunt (5+ days) but I realized that I start getting tired after 3 days. I could make 4-5 but nothing more. I also realized Izzy gets worn out after the 3rd day. Her nose was raw. Her ears were bloody. Her tits were bleeding. Here toes were a mess. I guess I should start putting the protective gear on her at the beginning of the hunt. I put it on here when she gets raw so she can keep going. Izzy slept for about 2 1/2 days straight after this trip. She would barely wake up to eat or go outside. She finally woke up last night and wanted to go do something.

I used the same minus the dish soap. The smell was on my dogs collar for a while maybe a month or two. Ask for the truck, time should take care of that.

One more variation on this formula which worked well on my dog. Rinse the dog off with plain water; need to make sure the coat is thoroughly wet. While the coat is still wet, rub in the baking soda to create a sort of paste. This baking soda paste needs to be just wet enough to stay attached to the dogs hair. Let this paste set in the coat for at least 5 minutes then rinse off the baking soda with hydrogen peroxide. I didn't even try to get the smell out of the collar.

The chickens were outside of Dodge City. We have found them two years in a row. Last year I got my limit (1) two days in a row. This year I found them at the end of the hunt and only got my limit once.

thats great, when I lived in that area (15 miles norrh of Cimarron) you had to travel east to find the chickens.
