I had a whitetail mounted at Hiblers in Kingsville...$665 plus tax, plus $45 crate, plus shipping. That was my first whitetail buck, and I didn't really have any other options, but considering that I paid $670 for a bull elk mount in Colorado, I thought that was awfully high for a whitetail.
What is the typical price range (I thought I've read on here that about $400 is typical), and what do you do if you get a deer that you'd like to mount but it would be a day or two before you could get it to a taxi? I assume you'd have to keep the head cold, but without a meat locker it seems pretty hard to do that in Texas unless it happens to be cold enough outside.

Galen Logan out of Gilmer charged 400 for Joshua's last year and does an unbelievable job. Anyone in East TX should contact him.

Most from a professional taxidermist will cost at least $400. There are some that are cheaper, but not many. I've seen some done by individual as a hobby around the $200 mark, but you can tell they weren't professionals.
Just make sure the person doing it does quality work. To me, it is worth a little extra to get a great mount that you can enjoy looking at for years to come.

At $665, I'm expecting mine to show up with gold teeth!
If yall are driving a long ways and/or can't take it in the day of, do you just put the head in the cooler with the antlers sticking out or what?

The idea is to keep your caped out head cool and dry. Do not get it wet if you can help it and do not place it in a sealed plastic bag for too long either. I have used a cooler specifically for transporting a deer head for years. It is called Trophy Cooler and made in Tomball Texas I believe. Not sure what they cost now but I paid $35 for mine about 10 years ago. It has been all over Texas and used by several friends and family also. It is big enough for a small bag of ice, the cape and head to fit in. It has a soft side top that fits around the bases of the antlers and snaps shut. I have left mine in it for several days before taking it in to the taxi. I place a large trash bag between the ice and the cape to keep it dry as the ice melts. Hiblers has always been pricey because of how much business they get from the King Ranch. You should not have a problem finding a good taxi close to where you live that will do a quality job for $400-$500. Hope this helps.

(the same guy that runs Whaley's Processing just south of town on 281) I used this guy for my first mount and if I still hunted anywhere near there I would drive quite a way out of the way to go back to him. Great price and an awesome mount. I have paid less but would gladly pay more to get the quality of mount you will get here.

He doesn't do my work, but one of his proteges does. I have been slowly trying to learn about the trade myself. Working on mastery of some of the more mundane steps right now.

I've used Flagg Group in Dallas for 5 shoulder mounts over the years. Last was around 6-7 years ago and was around 250...their website says 385 now w/o panel. I've always been pleased with them

I found that you can get them from $400 - $600 - what is bad, is the waiting.
If you are going to do it, give it your best!
