I'm new to waterfowl hunting and tried it once last year with a friend but didnt see anything. I'm in Frisco and went to Lewisville lake. Hopfully I'll get some gear for Christmas like waders, waterfowl camo parka..etc. If anyone is going to Lewisville lake or areas close by please PM. Just trying to get started in this new sport and would greatly appreciate hep from some experience hunters.

Moved here from Pennsylvania right? How has the bowhunting gone for you? A lot different from Penn I bet as will the waterfowl hunting.
How old are you? Can you hunt weekdays? Do you have a Public Hunting Lands permit? That info might help with someone helping.
Good Luck and waterfowl hunting is addicting! John

Yeah from Pa different hunting is right. I didn't get my public land permit since hunting LBJ for deer and planning on Lewisville lake for hogs $ ducks. I can take off during the weekdays need some planning for work and the wifey. Just looking to learn the ropes

Just get some Mallard, Gadwall, Widgeon, and teal decoys. You don't need a dozen of each in your bag though. What I did is put together a pre-packed decoy bag of a few of each that is ready to go each time I hunt. Ended up with about 20 or so in all. That's quite plenty IMO. Just find a brushy area on the shoreline as to conceal yourself and with the wind at your back. Ducks land into the wind. Set the decoys in kind of a half circle shape to provide a funnel for the real ducks to land in. Don't be too uniform about it. Get some Max-4 camo, facepaint/mask and learn to call. From there you can do it. Most people use anywhere from #2 to #4 shot for ducks with a mod choke. Personally I use 2's because I like the little bit more range.
Nobody went out and showed me how to hunt last year when I started, but I was still able to kill plenty. I've already surpassed my totals from last year. You'll get there.

The one thing I've learned from this forum and from experience this year is the value of scouting. This is my 3rd year and the first 2 I had kind of set spots that people had taken me to so when done I'd pick up and go home. This year I spend an hour or 2 after every hunt driving around and figuring out where the ducks went that I could see but didn't come check out my spread.

The fear and dread of you will fall upon all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands. Genesis 9:2

This will be my second year hunting the lake. From lasts years experience i can say that i will always scout before choosing a spot. Scouting is important.
Also, if you do not have a dog or boat shooting ducks can quickly end in frustration when they are wounded and swim off. This will of course depend on the location you are at, but mostly you need to be able to pick your shots and be confident.
