My own! Hornady 165 gr. Spire Points running behind IMR4350 powder. Deadly accurate and great performance on deer.

Federal Premium 165 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips. My 06 groups so good with those you'd think I put a new barrel on the rifle. I shot a doe in the head this AM with them. This is all I'm shooting from now on.

Remington Core-Loks 150gr. PSP is the ammo I use, but it is the second best for my bolt action rifle. Unfortunately I can not find a place to purchase my best load anymore- Sellier & Bellot 150gr Core Cutting Soft Point. In my Rem 742 the best I have found is the Russian Silver Bear 168gr. The only thing I dislike about the Silver Bear is that it is a 'dirty' load. It seems to leave alot of residue in the barrel. I have tried the 150gr in the 742, but the accuracy was TERRIBLE to say the least. The same was true (but worst accuracy) for the 168gr in the bolt.

I thought the 742 was built just for 150 grain loads? Or so I've read.

190 sierra matchkings. My long range rig loves them over some H4350 for target work.

Well, like a DA I sold my .30-06 two years ago, finally back where I can replace it..
168gr Sierra Matchkings or 165gr FP Nosler Ballistic Tips.
My savage REALLY liked those matchkings. The guys I used to hunt with always talked crap about how inaccurate the .30-06 is and how crappy Savage is. Loved proving them wrong time after time. Never lost a deer, never missed a deer. All DRT.

I'd look for a good all around bullet that will cover the type of game you are after. Find several, then try them out. se which shoots the tightest grops. Remember to LET YOUR BARREL COOL between shots. Just dont try to go elk hunting with 150 grain ballistic tips just because they might shoot best in your gun. You just have to see what works best, in a bullet choice that fits the game you are after.

In my 3 .30-06s, I've settled on:
150 Nosler Solid Base behind IMR4320--Dall Sheep, numerous whitetails. 165 Nosler Accubond or Hornady Interlock behind Re-19--Mountain caribou, 2 Quebec-Labrador caribou, B.C. mountain goat. 180 Nosler Partition behind Norma 204--2 bull elk.
If you settle for factory loadings in your '06, you're settling for mediocrity.
