I've used a .308 BLR for a while now,no problems as far as accuracy, reliabilty, etc. It's a 1971 vintage and it still works. My 2 cents:buy what you can comfortably shoot. I can't shoot a bolt action comfortably,so I don't own any. If you can hit a tennis ball at 100 yards every time with a certain firearm, that's good enough to take a deer with. Don't worry what the magazines or anyone else says, find something that works for you,and practice, practice, practice. That's the only way to get good. Good luck!

I have a Steyr Pro Hunter, and I love it. Yes it will outshoot a savage and no there not the most acurate out of the box rifle you can beat them in any price range. Anything from Steyr. I prefer the SSG PII myself, (around $2600 with double set trigger). Also, if you can find one, a SigArms SHR 970 (around $1000), which you can change the caliber VERY easily by simply changing the barrell only (in most cases) and out of the box, i would put it up against any gun mentioned here so far. jmho. good luck

Friend, I wouldn't harm thee for all the world, but thou art standing where I am about to shoot.

From what I've seen, X2. Or an AR-10. Both are sweet shooters.

Well, it depends what you want. Do you feel like buying a deer stand rifle, a shooting range rifle or a stalking rifle? For a deer stand rifle, a Wby SubMoa or a ($$$) Remington Sendero are pretty hard to beat. For a range rifle, get the F-Class Savage or the Remington 5R.
A stalking rifle is another kettle of fish, though. Decent accuracy is required, but 1/2" groups are pretty academic, since the idea is to go hunting rather than simply to go shooting. Balance, handling and fit are what it's all about; you are looking to but a rife that's a **pleasure** to carry afield.
Of the rifles mentioned in this thread, I'd say the BLR is probably closest to a stalking rifle; I've owned a BLR and like the rifle very much, even though the triggers are usually mediocre. Other stalking rifles might be a Ruger #1 RSI, a Remington 7 or 673, a Winchester M70 Featherweight, etc. The point to be made is that its up to you to find what you like and what fits you and your style of hunting. Some people enjoy hunting with pretty rifles; it's hardly practical, but its pleasing to the hunter, which is all that really counts. The new Savage 14 Classic is a very handsome rifle for the price ...

price goes Im getting the best of the best I really like my auto-loader in .308 It is great for hunting, and really just about anything else. You may be served better with a shorter carbine version though for your needs.

I have a Remington 700 SPS tactical .308 I paid around 540 for it. Great rifle very accurate. I buy all of my firearms off of a website called : budsgunshop.com
If you go to their website and browse around you can find alot of good deals. You can also search by caliber and it will bring up everything they have in .308. My opinion is if you have to wait a little longer to get what you really want just wait. A remington 700 is hard to beat.

N.T.R.P when are we gonna have that range session you once spoke about? Everyone can bring their .308s out and we can have a scientific comparison on what are good shooting rifles. I'm not trying to call anyone out I just think it would be a good time, and I bet everyone will learn at least one thing that'll make them better at hunting or just better at shooting.

Maybe we can do it at my private range near Nocona, I just don't know how many of you are willing to drive that far.

If I could get some materials out to Blue Ridge to build a back stop we could probably use a friend of mine's land. I need to talk to him about this anyway because I have measured 1000 yards worth of shooting range out there. It's farm land so care would have to be taken.

My Winchester model 70 is over 30 years old. It's fine.
My Savage model 12 is about a year old. It's fine.
You won't find a rifle that needs to be replaced after 10 years of use. Your dad's Remington would need to be replaced after 1 year of abuse. Just take care of your gear and it will take care of you.
She was only a whiskey maker, but he loved her still.

I love my SPS and really like my son's SPS tactical. After shooting the SPS tactical, I realized how stiff my SPS trigger was and had it adjusted. I've owned lots of rifles, but the 700 in 308 is my favorite.
