Alright lets hear it. What is the longest anyone has kept or would keep a deer in the cooler covered with ice and draining the water daily and still eat it. A friend of mine kept his on ice for 6 days. The longest for me has been 4. What about y'all. Lets hear it from the butchers too.
If I'm not hunting something I must be dead.

I have kept mine up to 5 days with no issue. Lots of ice in a 128 cooler.

And that is only because I got tired of going and getting ice. Could have used a day or two more probably.

I put mine in trash bag after washing completely. I have left in refrigerator for at least 5-6 days. I think it is good to put the meat in trash bags instead of just pouring ice over the meat and leaving it. Draining the water out of the ice chest often will help make the ice last longer to.The most important thing to do no matter what is to get it on ice asap and be sure the meat has been rinsed off so no hair is left on meat.I cut meat for over 25 years and this has worked good for me. I think it helps the taste of the meat to let it stay on ice or in the refrigerator for atleast 3-4 days and let some of the blood drain out of the meat.I do not think it is a good idea to put the meat in an ice chest for very long without putting the meat in some kind of bag unless that is the only choice you have.

Over 7 days, on many occasions. It does not hurt the meat in any way, and IMO helps the taste. I always leave them in an ice chest for at least 4 days.

A couple of times it got left 7 days but I never left it longer than that. It ages the meat and makes it much more tender.

TPACK - if you put the meat inside a bag, then how would the melted ice help blood drain out?

How would the blood get soaked out of the meat if it is in a trash bag?

Mine will be 7 days tomorrow. Wouldn't do it any other way. I took block ice to the lease for this very reason. I will go to work on it tomorrow night.

I just wrapped my deer Monday evening 11/16, that I killed opening weekend. Let them sit quatered in ice for four days draining the blood off them every evening. Deboned on the fifth day and put in the shop refridgerator drapped over the racks to allow it to drain some more. On the ninth day worked it up and wrapped for the deep freeze. I agree that the longer you can let it age the better. I read where the optimal time for the enzymes in the meat to help break it down is 7-10 days. Just think of a calf that you take to the locker that usually will hang for two weeks, not much difference in my opinion and sure is GUD!!!

TPACK - if you put the meat inside a bag, then how would the melted ice help blood drain out? I never said that the melted ice would help drain the blood out. When I take the meat out of the trash bags after being in there for at least 5 days or more, there is always a bloody liquid that has drained from the meat.Sometimes I take the meat out after a few day , rinse it with cold water and put it in new bags to age a few more days.

I know YOU never said that, but that is the whole point of soaking the meat in an ice chest for a few days-to get the blood out. If you are gonna put them in a trash bag, you might as well just throw them in the refrigerator.
