Well ya'll next weekend I get to head down to San Saba to my friend's hunting lease for a long weekend. It will be my first time to hunt deer period. I just started hunting last December, I am a longtime fisherman. My friend has been trying to get me to hunt for over 14 years, and I finally gave in and said ok. But, I told him that if I am going to hunt, I am only going to bow hunt. He just happens to be an avid bow hunter, so needless to say, he was extremely happy with my decision.

So, my first hunt was last December for hogs, I was ready for it, or so I thought. Long story short, I never got a chance to take an ethical shot on a hog with my bow. Another hunter that was there at the ranch had a rifle, and I got to take one at 90 yards, and I got lucky never shooting that rifle and he went right down. What I didn't realize is that when I was sighting in my bow, I had my yardage all FUBAR, and was way the hell off. It was a blessing that I didn't get a chance with a bow, because I would have wounded an animal with a really bad shot.

I got to hunt again at the end of January this year, at the same place for hog. I had to trade one of my fishing weekends to do it, but it was worth it. I got my first hog with a bow. And then all I could do was think about my first bow hunt for deer in November. Needless to say, I corrected my problem with my bow, and every week, at least once a week since then, I shoot a few at my 3D buck target in the backyard.

My third attempt at bow hunting was at a different place in June, and I never got a chance at an ethical shot on a hog with my bow or rifle. That's an even longer story. So, like I said every week a few shots in the backyard. That and my desire for as much knowledge as possible about bow hunting for whitetail, I watched and read as much as I could about bow hunting.

Now, the countdown is on, and I cannot wait to get out there and see if I will be blessed with an opportunity to take a deer. I honestly don't care if it’s a doe or a spike, or a buck. I am looking forward to sitting in the stand, peace and quiet, time to think, or time not to think. I am so in need of just getting the hell out of dodge for a long weekend, it’s not even funny. Thanks for letting me unload that, and I wish you all the best of luck with your hunts.

concgrats on joining the club. hunting peroid is a great way to spend time relaxing and enjoying the life that god gave us. don't be so down on rifle hunting though, its still a challenge, just in a different way. remember, its not about the kill, i hunted with a bow for 4 years and only took a squirrel that chattered at me for 2 seconds too long. good luck with your newfound hobby.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

txtrophy- When I read my post again, I can see how you would think that I would be down on rifle hunting. After I took my first hog with a rifle, I got one of my own a couple of months later. I intend on using it primarily for hogs, but I really want my first deer to be with a bow. I know the odds aren't as good with a bow, but I am a patient man. I love my rifle, I do I do.
