While walking a hog trail through the briars of a creek bottom I flushed one while Deer hunting. To be certain, I got right on top of it before flushing it a second time. I know them well having hunted them before. I was surprised when I flushed one from the edge of the woods near Ray Roberts a couple years ago, but Young County? That is crazy west of a Woodcock's normal migration pattern.

It is a real bird though. Popular upland bird of the east, especially in Louisiana. They really are fun to hunt especially with dogs, because you can't hardly see them, but they hold very well. The only problem I found, was I shot more trees than birds when I hunted them. My dog's sire was a good woodcock hunting dog.

My setter pointed a few woodcock yesterday while I was quail hunting. After that she really wanted to work the edge of the woods...it was cool to see the dog adapt.

Nice. You will have to go take advantage of the bonus birds after Dec 18 when the season opens up on them.

We have quite a few on our deer lease in Panola county. Our lease is basically on a swamp. I bump them when running the atv through the cut-overs. Fun to hunt for sure.
