where we hunt, if all you want is meat, you shoot a doe or a trash spike. I hunt horns AND meat. I fill the freezer with the others, and wait for the Muy Grande. If I don't see him, oh, well, I still have plenty to eat without killing what might be the Muy Grande in the next year or so. Killing a young buck at our place is a sure way to get your hunting priveleges revoked.

Some folks don't hunt on a place where you are garaunteed to have a big selection to choose from.

yeah, I understand that. I used to hunt a place in SE TX (Newton County) that we would sometimes go the whole season without seeing a deer. In those cases, if it had 8 points, it was a legal deer, regardless of the age, and even then, guys were complaining about having to let all the forkys go.

Just understand that when you see us talking about what looks like a trophy go, we are letting it go because we know there are bigger ones there, and we are reasonably sure that our neighbors are on the same page about what is a shooter and what isn't. If the neighbors were shooting everything as it made the 13 inch measurement, we would have to do something different.

Probably the same recipe an old PH gave me for baked elephant's foot.

You dig a big hole in the ground, fill it with firewood and light it. When it's burned down to coals, toss the elephant's foot in and cover it with dirt. You bake the elephant's foot from Friday morning until Sunday night, dig it up and then you chew the elephant's foot from Sunday night until Friday morning.

The antlers are only edible if the deer was fed Indian Corn prior to you killing him! Its true!

i just thought some of yall who think yall know ages/scores would but there input on this but i see they have not....i posted a grimes county buck on here that we have had on camera for goin on 5 yrs and aged him at 2.5-3.5 but oh well i guess wats a trophy to one is trash to another...

First you have to prep the rack. Clean any flesh or hair and soak in water for 1-2 hours. Season to your liking and lest stand for 12 hours. Slice the rack into finger size strips and wrap in foil and put in the pit. Cook untill a nice brown color. Serve with jackalope stew, Bigfoot kabobs and a nice Indian corn.
