I have an older (1976) Mod. 70 .243 that I am getting fixed up for my wife. One thing I want to do is glass bed the action. Any pointers from those with more experience?
Thanks,
Jim

Unload the rifle. Seperate the action and stock. Spray your action with PAM no stick spray made for cooking pans. Coat your stock at the contact points and the first 1.5" of the barrel channel with "Devcon" epoxy. Bolt it back up, wipe off the excess and give it 24 hours to set. So you will have time to work, do not use quick set epoxy.

Yeah. Be careful! If you miss getting the release agent on any of the metal parts (such as screws, action, etc), you'll be taking it apart with a chisel and hammer. I've only done it once and other than being a little scary, it was simple enough. Just read and follow the instructions completely.

Is there any need to glass bed if you stock already has pillar bedding? if its pillar bedded and shooting good, i would not mess with it. you can check the stock channel and see if the barrel is touching anywhere. if it is, you could just clean that up to see if any improvement.

Is there any need to glass bed if you stock already has pillar bedding? If it was pillar bedded correctly, the barrel isn't touching the stock so there's no point except that I have known guys to glass bed their stock channel to make it water proof. When your rifle gets wet, it's eay to dry the exposed stock but under the barrel is a little tougher. Their thinking was to stop the stock from warping but I've personally never seen a stock warp due to moisture. Not saying it doesn't happen.
