Still learning these rules. Want to know if a 4 pointer with a less than 13" spread is legal ? or is this for 6 and 8 pointers only ? Thanks, saw a nice one and think it may be illegal to shoot. but he sure does look tasty. I thought that all 4 pointers wouldn't have this large of a spread.

If both antlers are branched, than it has to be 13" regardless of how many points. You can have a 8 point with 7 on one side and one on the other and it would be legal, but if both sides have more than one point than it has to be 13"

Et ur book out and carry it with you to verify, or study it hard. Would hate to see you mess up, it's costly.

Well said Malone.. better do your homework it could cost you big time. As they said.. if BOTH of its antlers are branched.. (like a typical 4 point) it has to be 13 inches.. no matter what if it has only ONE point on either antler side you can lay the hammer down on it..

It really is pretty simple, you can shoot monsters and babies, nothing in between and no old small 8 points or slick 6's... basically kill the good ones and the ones that might be good, can't shoot the odd balls that need to go...

Thanks for all the replies . I'm glad cause he is a nice 4 point. with a narrow inside spread. so hopefully no one will poach him and since I left him he'll grow up to be a good one for me. smile

The antler regs are a bit confusing, but there are really only two legal bucks that you can harvest... those with at least one unbranched antler and those greater than 13 inches.

It's a good rule, to get out all of the bad genes. atleast where I am hunting there is a good gene buck.

Just be mindful in most counties you can only kill one buck greater than 13" so if you kill a marginal deer the first day you are hunting does and spikes the entire season. Nothing wrong with that, just making a point.

The spirit of the restrictions are great, but there are alot of bucks at my place that have messed up little racks just forked enough to keep them safe, that should be shot before spreading their genes anymore.
