I am leaving Sat and my dog (Buck) too going to S.D. and hunting 4 days the question is how many shells do I take? We will be hunting Gettysburg area both public and private land. I have hunted pheasants for the last 7 or 8 years in north Kan. or south Neb. And the most I needed was I think 35 – 40 shells.

I would take 12 shells. If you need more your shooting sucks! (Limit is three roosters per day times four days)
Have fun...

Bring twice as many as you think you'll need. It would suck so bad to drive all the way to SD to get on some ringnecks. Just to find out you have to walk around the second half of the third day with nothing to shoot.
Besides, they have bonus birds there, too. Who knows you might need to drop a quail or two.

I always bring way to many shells. The way i see it , is that shells will never go to waist. If i dont use them all up this season then i will use them next season.

I was reading that you have to use nontoxic shot on public lands.

Bring a bunch... they don't spoil. Better safe then sorry nothing worse then trying to find ammo in the backwoods

I would bring extra shells, more than you could ever imagine shooting, so you couldn't possibly run out. I have a nice bag I load up with shells before I head out on a long trip hunting. I hope you have good luck.

Take a box a day. you won't shoot them all, but like said above, you run into some quail now and then and the next thing you know, you have shot way more shells than you thought you would.

You will need non-toxic shot for the public land and I'd take a box a day in case you run into some grouse or prarie chicken.
On another note, it has been really wet up there so the corn is still not harvested in much of the state. This makes it much harder to walk the fields. (The birds were still thick in the corn when we were there last week.) Bring as much as you can carry and be sure to road hunt in the evenings!
