Your welcome. Hopefully this will be enough to make it happen. If you know of other sites that this would do good on, feel free to post at other places.

Matteo, This does not belong in the classfieds. Your not selling anything. You do realize this petition and several before it have been going around for several years now. Online petitions have been going around on this at least 15 years now. It has almost reached urban legend at this point. As much as I would like this to happen being that I collect USGI rifles. It will never happen. Under current Federal law machine gun receivers can not be altered to semi auto. Even if they are altered to semi auto, the receivers are considered machine guns by current federal laws. "Once a machine gun, always a machine gun". Federal laws defining machine guns and machine gun ownership by the public would have to be changed. If they had rifles not already slated for military use that could be released, the most they could do is sell the parts or parts kits for persons wanting to build M1As on new semi receivers. They have in fact sold those parts before. I bought several M14 trigger groups and other parts from the CMP just a few years ago. The CMP has said that even if such an event happened to change federal laws allowing them to sell altered M14s to the public, they have no rifles available for release to the public. http://www.odcmp.org/new_forum/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=60545Nothing wrong with letting the government know our feelings, but I would worry with the current administration that we could be giving too much exposure to the CMP and a return of the executive order banning imports of ex USGI rifles or the beginnig of the end to the CMP. This might be better pushed in different political times considering it involves a change of machine gun laws and ATF interpretation of those laws.

Just for history trivia, the original CMP did at one time receive permission to sell M14s but the passing of the Gun Control Act of 1968 prevented that. That is when this started.

I realize that this sounds like a case of too good to be true and therefore false. I also sense that your past experience with these types of things seems to make you want to give up . Maybe this doesnt happen, but I will tell you now that I will never give up. I am a glass half full kinda guy and if there is even a tiny chance of us being able to influence this, my name is on it. I bet this sounds like a good Idea to alot of people , including you. If everyone is aware of it then there is the possibility that common sense may prevail. Albeit slight. They would like us to all resign to what they put upon us. I will not resign to it. I hope others including yourself will continue to take every opprtunity to tell them so. Thank you for your comments.

No, I would not delete it. And I am sharing in the dialog as just another forum member. I agree with you, especially since only 10% of the original M14 production remains in our hands. But I do worry that this kind of thing could do more harm than good to the CMP with exposure that is fuel to the fire for our current anti gun administration and law makers using the notion that the CMP is trying to sell altered machine guns to the public which is not true. I googled to see if I could tell how old that online petition is. First hit I found a post from March 2003 with the same link. The people posting were in the 4000 range on signatures at that point. It just grows and grows over the years, but it is never sent to anyone. Do some research. That article was written in 1981. M14s were last being destroyed during the Clinton years, yet I think most were sent to other countries for use during the same time. None have been destroyed in at least 10 years. Currently M14s are being held in storage for use, are in use. The last figures I found, and some of these are a few years old. A lot has changed due to our middle east wars so many more are probably in use today than the figures below because of that. Air Force had 3500 rifles Navy has a couple on each of it's ships for line throwing, maybe 500 rifles Marines had 3000 as marksman rifles, but this figure I am sure is much larger than that due to the Iraq and Afghan wars. Army had 120,000, but dropped to 22,660 in use a couple years ago with another 87,462 in storage due to designated marksman rifle needs in Irag and Afghanistan. Many small combat units and military guard use the M14 also. Combined who knows how many more rifles that would be. It is only when we return home from the middle east conflicts will there be worries of the M14s being destroyed again. It is very safe for now. Rather than destroyed, I think what might happen is those rifles end up being issued to the armys of the new governments we helped create in those countries. Especially when they are eventually replaced with a new design of rifle that fills the nitch they are currently serving. Which will happen due to the M14 not being a renewable resource for our military. There are only so many left to go around. Check these pictures of M14s in use. Many of the pictures are recent: http://www.imageseek.com/m1a/gallery/serviceAnd this online book, see the section on page 164 titled "Ignore the Petition to Sell the M14!". M14 Rifle History and Development IMO, There are current issues that we need to keep tabs on that are much more important than spending our energy on an outdated petition (probably used to phish email address's) that has been bouncing around for at least 7 years now.
