I have a lot of opportunities on hogs up close on the move. A shotgun would be ideal. What's out there in 3-1/2", 5 round semi-auto 12ga? As for ammo, who has had success at 50 yards, and with what load?

You don't need 3.5" ammo. Save your wallet and shoulder the grief and get 2.75" they work just fine from 80yds and closer.

Got a hold of one of those yesterday. I'm with you on this, but wouldn't mind finding something less expensive. Beretta 1301 Tactical for the win.

Wondering if anyone has used a KelTec. It's a pump but it wins on mag capacity every day if you come across a sounder close in.

I've shot hundreds from the air with a 12 gauge. And unless your just looking to pick one or two off (use a rifle) forget the 3 1/2". 3" 000 or 00 does just about as well and doesn't cost near as much, wallet or shoulder. It still boils down to shot placement if your looking to knock them down, and it's a lot easier to put 3-4 well placed 3" shots on a sounder than it is a 3 1/2". Just my personal experience.

I will chime in as a I have some testing behind my belt. There is a noticeable difference is shot difference. Find some Federal Tactical with flight control wad. Night and day difference between it and normal buckshot.
You don’t need a fancy shotgun

I'll revise my search criteria to 3". Good advice. I've shot hundreds from the air with a 12 gauge. I’ve killed around 80 hogs with my 40 yr old 870 Wingmaster shooting 300 grain Hornady SSTs out of rifled barrel. Deadly and accurate.

I started using a 12 gauge for hogs a few years ago. Farthest I have shot one is probably a tad over 40 yards and I always use 00 or 000. I have used 3.5", 3", and 2.75". From what I have seen penetration is about the same across the board but by far I have had more drop in their tracks with the 3.5" and 3". I can only assume this is because of more pellets being delivered to the animal. One thing that really impressed me was how far 00 will penetrate. I shot a pretty good size Boar a couple years ago in the shoulder with a 3.5" Winchester 00 load. 15 of the 18 pellets hit the neck and shoulder and 11 of 15 exited and took out another hog behind it. I never really appreciated 00 much until that experience.
I usually load a 3.5" in the chamber followed by 2 3" or 2.75" in the tube. I have missed a few running shots with the 2.75" and cant help but wonder had I been using a 3" or 3.5" with more pellets if those shots would have turned out differently. For that reason I will not be buying anymore 2.75" 00.
Someone above mentioned using it out to 80 yards. Not going to say it cant be done but dang that sure seems pretty extreme to me.

Can’t say much on what ammo to use, but I’d recommend buying a Nordic or Choate tube if you have a pump gun that will accept it, and save yourself a lot of money.

Hit them in the ear area and they fall right over. We use them out of a Polaris ranger and chase them down in wheat fields. A green viridian laser helps a good bit.

I have a Beretta 3901. It's in great shape and hasn't had much use at all. It has. 28" barrel with every choke out there. I'm going to do some digging around and see if I can find a 24" barrel for it.

Found a 24" barrel, new at a great price. I won't have the 5 shots I was after, but at least I'll start to get some use out of this 3901. It's all black, nylon stock, this gun will work.

Nordic offers an extension for a 1301. Not sure if that fits a 3901. You might call and ask. Best magazine tubes in the business in my opinion.

The 3901 is a great shotgun. It shoots clean and is also very easy to clean when necessary (rarely).

I always run an AR, usually a 6.8 but I have thought about taking my Benelli with the 24" barrel and Nordic extended tube out for close range stuff..
