Been looking for a short barrel .308 bolt action for a while. Looked at all the offerings, played with them at the stores and never really like what I found. Started doing some research online and came across a distributor special from Savage that's not listed on their website. Did some more research and decided to get one. Local dealer couldn't get one so I ordered from Tombstone Tactical for only $549 shipped...

It's a Model 10-PSR. 18" heavy threaded barrel with 5R rifling and detachable box mag. Also has oversized "tactical" bolt knob. I added a JP Tactical Comp, Nikon Prostaff 5 3.5-14x40 scope, and bipod.
As luck would have it, I also found some Varget and worked up some starting loads to try out this weekend once I get it sighted in. Just thought I would share, here are a couple of cell phone pics

I recently bought the same rifle with a 20" unthreaded barrel.
Let me know how she shoots.

18" is a SBR?

smile just giving you a hard time. I think, I have a hard time buying a hunting rifle with a barrel more than 16" anymore. Looks like good rifle to me. can't wait to hear how she shoots.

Hoping to hit the range this weekend. Will post up results but don't expect them to be great yet since I will mainly be sighting in with cheap ammo and doing some load development testing.

Dang, I'd take that over the SPS Tactical I have for the same money, any day of the week!

didn't know Savage does the 5R,
I have a 5R but it's from Remington with a 1:11.25 twist

do tell how she groups

good price and is competitive with Rem 700 AAC-SD

I really like that gun. With it being a 5R it should be a tack driver!

It has the accutrigger, it's just not cocked so it's hard to see.

You can call them and see how much it would be for them to build you one in LH.
A lot of people don't realize that they can build just about any configuration you want, you're not limited to what is on the market...

Thats exactly what I was thinking. I have a 16.5 rem 700 in .308. I would have bought this instead if I had known about it at the time.

5r means nothing as far as accuracy goes.

Nice rifle.

For anyone looking to get one, just google: Savage 22076.
22076 is the mfg part number.
Tombstone Tactical was the cheapest place I found and I had the rifle to my FFL in 5 days.

Range Report:

Rifle is very accurate. 10 shots at 50 yds, all touching in a 1.5 inch vertical string.
Tried at 100 but, this scope is a POS! This is the first Nikon scope ive tried, and will probably be my last. Couldn't get it to focus at 100, clarity was awful to say the least, edges were very blurry no matter what cheek position I used, eye relief on 14x was very short and had my kneck stretched to get a good picture.
I'm returning the scope and getting a Vortex Viper, which from previous experience I know to be a far superior scope to this Nikon.

What ring and base are you using. Something isn't right and 1.5" is not close to the potential of that rifle.

Weaver bases and Leupold rings...everything was nice and tight, did not loosen during firing and was consistent in bullet placement so scope is not damaged internally.
I should also note, the 10 shots were one after another, no cooling, to see how it shoots as it heats up. Consistent vertical stringing. The first 5 shots were easily 3/4"...

I have 3 of that exact scope and have found them all to be excellent performers. Something is up.
