Just a suggestion, go back and read your post from the past few weeks before you continue to contradict yourself. Maybe try reading the guidelines/rules; section 8&9 specifically. If you are truly looking to learn, make friends, and gain new hunting opportunities from the forum you might want to change your approach.

While I think this post is pretty weird I will agree with part of it. If a 10 year old wont even consider a 125 ish 8, Im thinking they didnt really work for anything, didnt know where it came from, daddy just put a big deer in front of them and that was that.

You know lots of good down home wealthy people who worked hard all their lives and have a nice life and nice things... well their kids usualy turn out WORTHLESS because they always got everythign. Either way I dont care, my kids wont start hunting and be shooting the biggest buck I can put them on or even a buck, they will be shooting does. Im getting my fiance into hunting with me... guess what she is shooting does, not bucks. Oh well lets see where this goes..

Just curious why you think it's not ok for a kid to shoot a buck? Or your fiance?

Because they never worked for any of it or learned any of it. Did you buy your kid a new corvett for their first car or a brand new f-350 diesel 4x4 king ranch?

Its just how I feel about it. If you need to have big horns to feel interested in hunting then I think something is wrong with the picture. Sure I like nice bucks, but If neither bucks or does had horns I would still do it.

I wasn't arguing with you, just wondering. My son's first deer was a doe too but now I would rather see him shoot a buck than myself. I usually let him tag-out on his bucks before I really hunt. He does help any time I am working at the lease and I have taught him since he was 5 about hunting so I guess your situation is different than mine.

Maybe you should try starting off being a meat hunter first, then work your way up to being a trophy hunter.... wink whistle

I dont have a problem with kids shooting bucks, but I dont think it should be their first deer and especialy not a big buck.

When/if I have kids they will likely shoot the first doe that is 2.5 YO that steps out, and I guarantee you they will be thrilled to do it and work their way up. Your not supposed to strart out on top.

I always start kids out on does... Kind of need to prove they can kill something other than paper when the shakes set in.

I didnt say your kid hasnt or his kid hasnt. I said I think any 10 year old who wont consider shooting a 125 inch 8pt is a spoiled little kid. Your opinion may vary, but that is mine. I know little kacy or however you spell it has shot some big deer, alot bigger than I have or probably ever will I dont have any propblem with it, Im not jealouse. I dang near had a heart attack shooting my 105" cull off our place this year. Admitedly I dont know what you started your kids off with and dont care but mine will be as stated above. What your kid has earned is all up to you as you are paying for whatever they are getting, but starting them off with the best of everything isnt how I want to start mine.

I agree starting em out at the top is likely not the best plan, but will never judge what one does for his kids if it works for them. Each kid is different, and truly had no plan just started with does moved to mgt deer and now she has taken some great deer, she still has interest in hunting and shooting big deer hasn't changed a thing ad I feel blessed and fortunate to have been able to make it happen and I may not be here tomorrow so the times with her are special and she will have some great memories and stories to share with her kids that may not have happened if I had waited til she was able to pay her own way just sayin...

I agree with that.

I would still call most any 10 year old who wont shoot a 125" 8 spoild tho whistle

And im not passing jugement on anyones kids, but perhaps Im hope mine turn out differently than many I have seen.

I agree but if they are fortunate enough to hunt where 125 is the norm I can see it, it all depends on the area you hunt if we were hunting at my brothers in east tx my daughter would shoot a 125 with out a doubt but if we were in the panhandle she would think that is pretty nice deer and not even consider shooting it. Location matters!

I'll weigh in on this just a bit......

Here's my son's first deer - at 12yrs old. The plan was for him to shoot a doe, but this came in trailing a doe so I let him shoot the buck....no big deal.

Here's his second at 13yrs old....at dawn during the special youth season a week before opening weekend. He took his first doe later on during this season.

Here's his fourth deer at 14 yrs old....foggy morning and I thought this was a cull we had seen earlier in the year... turned out to be a 12 with 3 tines broken at the beams

He is now 17 and has been to the lease once this year and from what I can tell, has very little interest in hunting anymore... My speculation is that since it has been slow, he's lost interest because we're not seeing any good bucks... Who know's...it could be that he's 17 and wants to run with his buddies...I can live with that. My brother and i have this conversation often about how I shouldn't have let him shoot these bucks at such a young age because now he has no knowledge of just how hard it can be and when things slow down..he loses interest. I don't know... maybe there IS something to that. Not saying who's wrong or right...just sharing my story for perspective....

I went through the same thing around that age and for a few years following. Up until that age I was fishing or hunting any chance I got - then for a few years got away from it. When I got back to the outdoors, I have been at it full force for the last 20+ years. I bet your son is back to loving it in a few years. He's probably more focused on girls, friends and sports right now.

Guess it just depends on the kid. I was raised in south Louisiana where anything that was legal was shot. Watching people come in with 2 adult does and 4 yearlings after a single hunt pretty much turned me off. I hunted down there for 3 years before even seeing a deer.

I passed on does and spikes for years, never had the urge to just simply shoot something.

I was raised in a "its brown its down" environment, but that attitude never sat in with me. I'm 31 years old now and love to deer hunt but have only killed 5 deer in my life with the last one being 5 or 6 years ago.

The past 3 years I've passed on a few that would be far bigger than anything I've ever killed. I was never into the whole hunting deal just for the killing aspect. I've always looked at it as I'd rather "not shoot" and regret than to shoot, kill and regret.
