Went to the Minnesota Boundary Waters last week for a canoe/fishing trip with my dad, some of his friends and a few of my buddies. While the fishing was subpar, the scenery was breathtaking. I will post some other pics from the trip in the OT when I get the chance, but for now here are some that I was able to take of some of the waterfowl that breed in northern Minnesota.

The most common thing I was were black duck hens with their almost mature broods. This hen and her offspring came right into our campsite for the two days we stayed there looking for any scraps that we left on the ground. Momma always brought up the rear and was a little bit more wary than her kiddos.







We had some common mergansers that spent one morning diving and resting around camp. We counted 22. Was cool to watch them all dive at one time. Then fish would begin to hit the water followed by the birds surfacing and devouring them.







Minnesota is famous for their loons. Amazing birds, very soothing sitting around the campfire listening to their call. This mom and juvee let us get about 15 ft from them before diving. They stayed under for around 45 seconds on average.





And then my dad and I found these guys paddling out. I think they are ringnecks in summer plummage.

Are they common mergansers or red breasted mergansers?

Very cool and neat place. I crossed into Canada from there and spent a week in Quetico. Very nice to not hear an engine or see another person for a week!
