That's interesting. It will have to be pretty awesome to get one over on the Garmin. Neither Labradar or Caldwell figured out how to do it. Athlon has some pretty good stuff though IMO.

Interesting piece of equipment, will keep an eye on this to see how the reviews turn out.

That's a shocker...new player and coming in hot. It'll be interesting to see how their ballistic app that pairs with it works.

A friend of mine left his Garmin with me in September. I've fired about 500 shots since then, performing load development on many rifles. It only failed to capture one shot. And that was my fault. I had the Garmin too far behind the muzzle.

Getting DOPE on these rifles, the chronograph has been perfect, confirming out to 800 yards with reliable scopes. And there have been tines the chronograph velocities did not match up with the DOPE. At times a 50 fps error. Inside 500 yards, you won't see it. 500 yards and beyond, it will show up. I cared more about the ES of the loads, and the average MV has always been a good starting point for verifying DOPE.

He called me last week and needs his Garmin back. I said no problem, I will order one for myself.

I think I'm going to change that plan and give this Athalon a run.

There are buttloads of reviews and comparisons between the Garmin, Magnetospeed, and LabRadar on the 'net. Every one I've seen shows velocities within 2-4fps of each other. I've shot bb guns, arrows, pellet guns, a variety of rifles, etc and the Garmin is amazing. Athlon's may be just as good, time will tell. Wonder if they're offering a lifetime warranty on this new unit?

The magnetospeed is very accurate, an overall great unit. I got tired of the change in POI every time you mounted it to your barrel. Instead of developing loads while at the same time getting velocities, etc it had to be done separately. You're right in that if you looked at the Garmin and Athlon side by side at a distance you wouldn't be able to tell them apart.

I played with this at the show, it will be a good unit if it does in fact pick up all shots like the Garmin. I also looked at the LabRadar small unit, it actually looks and feels like a solid piece of equipment, not a plastic kids toy like the other two. The rep there was very quick to let me know it is made in North America. The screen is better and I liked the internal memory it has. However, after owning the old LR unit, it is hard to trust the thing to actually work right every time. Maybe the introduction of the Athlon unit will adjust market costs in a consumer friendly way.

Labradar would be heroes if they'd let us trade in the old one, for a some credit on a new one.

I preordered, got a nice little discount. I was thinking of getting a magnetospeed but this will be better since I can chrono boomerangs, crossbows, air pistols etc. Having a chrono will really be a gamechanger for me, no more combing forums/youtube for chronograph data on obscure military cartridges or less common barrel lengths.
