Hello,

Most of the guides on DIY duck blinds advocate an A-frame method that acts more like a ground blind, leaving the hunter open to spotting from the air. Isn’t the point of a duck blind to cover the hunter from aerial view? I.e. the blind should have a roof?

Thanks

Are you wanting to build a permanent blind on private property? I would said yes, a blind with a roof is ideal. I did a permanent blind on a private lease I had for years, and followed the Dr Duck design about 95%, link below.

That blind a built was simi-mobile, I designed it so it could break down easy with wood screws and fit in my truck, I broke it down and moved it 4 times.

If you are wanting something real easy set up/break down each hunt, layout blind is your best bet or natural cover and dead or cut limbs/brush. I hunt public 100% of the time, and normally can always find natural cover and maybe add to it a little. The key I have found is to have cover for your face, and I don't mean face paint or mask, but being able to hide your face behind brush. This can be accomplished with a stick in the ground, and vegetation on top, like pic below. I put my face between me and the ducks and they don't see me. If ducks fly over head, I don't need a roof, put my face down and lean into the brush, they don't see me.

Thank you for sharing the picture. From what I can tell you are piling brush on top of each other and using it as sort of a ground blind?

Concealment is 90% of successful duck hunting IMO. Not bad idea to use lay down blinds as well. Easy to conceal. I have successfully used a frame designs, but late season w wary ducks, unless you are hunting area that hasn’t been hunting in a while, better have some ground back up- or get very creative w decoy spreads, ie ducks approaching not upwind towards you - fence rows, transitions or clumps of cattails or brush also help clean up lines, which are not very natural looking from above. Brush brush brush , face masks and stand very still.

Happy holidays.
