Summer time hog killing is full swing lots of wheat fields being hit that means lots of pigs being killed. I've used all kinds, some better than others. Vote in the poll to see results. Let us know what success you've had with your choices. Also what failures you've had with others.

223 bullet for hogs
multiple choice, up to 3 choices

Other, 60 grain nosler partition. No disappointments no failures just a lot of dead hogs and deer.

Only failure Ive had would be with V-max. Questionable shot placement as it was off hand and I was shooting at the body as I couldn't hold on the head. Never found him never found blood, but I shot and hit him 3 times in the front shoulder region and he fell over every time I shot. Im sure with a rest and better placement he would have been no contest.

70gr TSX pushed by AA2200 has been shooting laser beams and dropped more pigs out of my 223 Wylde than anything else I have used in .223.

Moved over to 6.8 shooting 120gr SSTs....much, much better!

Nosler Partition no doubt! Second choice would be something bonded like the Accubond. Third would be a soft point.

My 223 likes the 64 grain Winchester Ranger PSP ammo. Accurate & kills the heck out of pigs. Just got in a case of ammo yesterday for the Summer & Fall pig killin' season. banana2

I killed two last night with vmax. One never took a step and one stood back up after about a minute and required a second shot. The first shot hit him too far forward under the eye.

I currently use a bonded soft point bullet but will be trying the TSX here soon.

Soft points for me, but just picked up some 70 grain TSX. Can't wait to try the TSX.

55 gr FMJ faster the better.
NOT 62 GR GRREN TIP STEEL CORE.

I have tried them all. TSX has an edge but the rest come apart on larger hogs and/or do not have the penetration to hit vitals. The Hornady TAP or Commercial version is ok too.

Hogs are not like deer. Their body is very dense and thick.
The video below was all 55gr aside from second scene where I used a 762x39.

No doubt you killed a lot of hogs, but you had a lot of got back ups and took more than one to stop.

Anything will kill them with right shot, but there are better options. up

In the last year I have been using the Razorback XT's and really like them, but they are getting tough to find. I wish Winchester would just sell the projectiles for hand loading. In the past I have used the 55gr TSX to kil more hogs than I could probably count.

I want my bullets to come apart, I normally use hollow points/ballistic tips. I don't shoot them in the body, it's head or neck only even when I'm using my N750. I like them to drop in their tracks. I've tracked a lot of pigs over the years that were body shot with all sorts of ammo & calibers.

Partition. Everything else is trying out for second place.

I feel the same way, as a reloader I have to try all the new stuff when it comes out, but 90% of the time I find myself coming back to partitions.

Damn sure ain't no flies on the Partition, it's what ALL other projectiles are measured against.

The topic was what is the best .223 round for Hogs.

I answered with, I have tried most every bullet. The most consistent for me has been the 55gr FMJ. Barnes is king, but if the FMJ was a close second for me, it became a no brainer.

I know it is hard for you hunter types to agree with me or even fathom the idea that my choice is plausible.

If a Hog is standing still, most of the time if I am aiming at it, it is a dead Hog and drops.

On running shots, which I do most of, it is an entirely different ballgame.

Shot placement is key. Penetration is important.

You naysayers can buy all that expensive ammo with fancy names all you like if it builds your confidence in your rig. Because that too is important to marksmanship. Confidence.

I will stick to what works, as these rifles of mine are tools.

You say they get back up sometimes when I shoot them. Yeah, most are dead and bleeding out. So I just shoot them again. I have seen 300wm hits on Hogs and they run off. Hogs are the most resilient animals.

With my current ammo/rifle combo, I have had far less hit and runs than with all the rest of the .223 ammo selections.

Fast, light, solid bullets do the job for me on Hogs.
Same ammo on a deer and not so good. THin skinned animal. Deer need the softer bullets so they do not punch right through.

Edited to add:

Twist rate on a .223 is just as important as bullet selection. I like to have mine on the less stable side of things. That way when the bullet hits, it will tend to yaw.

Those first two lines there tell me that you choose the FMJ because it is more cost effective for "spray and pray" type shooting like it sounds like you do mostly. There is no doubt in my mind you know that there are far better choices out there but you choose the FMJ due to cost. Sure it kills but so does a sling shot. That don't mean I am going to arm myself with a sling shot when I can take a rifle though.

And that last part of the quote I assume you are talking about your FMJ ammo. I got news for ya.......FMJ aint a solid. wink

I don't know if anyone saw this thread on ar15.com or maybe some one on here knows him. I think he lives outside of Austin. Apparently he's pretty much only uses pretty much only FMJ's and while it appears has all of this pictures have been removed just the sheer number of blank photos should be an indication of another major hog hunter using FMJ's. http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_10_9/664595_If_223_doesn_t_kill_hogs.html&page=1

Anyway, soft points and TSX are working for me so I am not going to mess with success! My current go to is Hornady 55g SP cheap and plentiful.

I kill most of my hogs with TSX or FMJ , steel cased ammo. American made bullets fragment and kill, but won't exit big hogs. Steel jacketed bullets yaw and exit every time for me, which also gives me good blood trails when they take off into the woods.

The entry hole is always smaller than caliber used because the skin closes up and you won't get blood from it, you have to have an exit for a blood trail.

Hogs are thick and tough where it counts, especially when you come across the 300# and up big boys of east Texas, need tough bullets for them.

If you have time and can hit the Central Nervous System (CNS; Head or neck/spine), any bullet will drop them on the spot.

My choices are not cheap but sure work

Nosler Partition
Swift Sirocco
Nosler bonded, this might become my fave not sure yet but made a lot like the Trophy Bonded bearclaw which worked well for years.

You can use whatever you want for whatever reason you want, as long as it's legal. But don't feed me a bunch of BS about how "this" or "that" is superior or even as good when you and everybody else knows that it isn't. Use what you want, but atleast have the balls to say "I'm cheap, and just don't care." If my trigger finger had Tourette's, I'd probably want to save a few shekels as well.
