Get a scope with good eye relief and a kick pad.

That reply made me smile but it's the truth. Untill you get used to the recoil, I'd buy the reduced loads for it. or have a recoil suppressor installed on it. That will knock a huge amount of recoil out of it but it will be LOUD. I had a recoil suppressor put on a .338mag and after 2 shots, people on both sides of me at the range would get up and leave.
I was hunting Mulies in the Bridger Teton Wilderness in Wyoming once. When I shot my deer, my hunting buddy (who was over a mile away) told his wife "Well, Bud got one". Makes my ears ring to remember it.

Well if you get to where you don't flinch every time you pull the trigger you've got a rifle that you can almost kill anything on North America with. Remember to hold tight and slowly squeeze the trigger like your trying to break a glass rod. Good Luck.

Don't go to the range to sight it in wearing only a t-shirt! When I'm hunting, I don't really feel or hear anything. The range is a different story, though!!!

Savage makes fine rifles, adn the 7mm Magnum is a proven killer of everything in North America, most notably, shoulders...

Before I Recoil-compensated one of my rifles, I bought a 12" square piece of Sorbothane (1/8" thick) on eBay. I cut it into pices, layered 3 of them together, slit open the inside liner of one of my Dove vests over my right shoulder, inserted the Sorbothane, and sewed it up. In the end, I had a 3/8" thick pad of the same material that Kick-ezz recoil pads are made from. Worked well for me.

Great rifle, great caliber, may take a little getting used too on the recoil. I shoot a 7mm ultra mag. Its not a gun that I run a box of rounds through at the range. I sight them in and put them up. When its time to do some pleasure shooting I grab the 220 or 22-250. Main thing is don't shoot it so much that it hurts. When it gets uncomfortable put it up. There is always tommorrow.

Miss buying a friends Remington 700 for $300.00, found out he sold it to another guy at work and he had to wait for payment, told him I had cash now if he would have let me know I'd bought it. He's going to talk to me before he lets anybody else know if he's looking to sell any guns etc again.

i dont know what everyone is talking about how the recoil is so bad, my wife shoots my 7 mag and she isnt a body builder.. as long as you have it properly shouldered, ive never had an issue with it. 7 mag is a great gun, maybe a little over kill for just texas but to each his own, the wife only shoots it because she got used to it and you know how that goes.. i have a 4-12 power scope on it and that works well.

shot one for years (about 20) recoil sucks I dont care what anyone says. you dont feel it in the field with hunting clothes on when shooting at animals like was posted above but 2 or 3 rounds at the range and I have all of it I want. I finally put a muzzle brake on it but dang they are so loud and lots of muzzle blast. I started taking the muzzle brake off in the field then finally said to heck with this. I bought a 25-06,7mm-08 and a 6.5 swede. I love that swede, that will kill what you need with no fuss at ranges most of us are competent at.
And no, I did not sell the 7 mag......yet, but I do keep threatening to trade it off.

Don't be afraid of the recoil. Depending on how big an ole boy you are it might not bother you. I suggest a really good recoil pad, i have one so soft you have to put a pin in it to store the gun. It's on a 300 win mag and i have a nephew that shot it 4 times when he was 9 years old and probably didn't weigh 90 lbs. I shoot over a box of ammo each time i take it to the range, no problem. Id's say no, on the muzzle break idea, I guess they work but I think it's just that they are so loud you don't notice the recoil because you are worried about if your ears are gonna start bleeding!

With a Savage you cant go wrong. I have a Savage 30-30 past down from my great grandpa and it has brought my a lot of luck and many dead deer. So much so that most every rifle I now bye, I make sure its a Savage. Can't say too much for the 7mm though; since I have never shot that. Have had a lot of people tell me that all game in North America can be brought down with a 30-06. But I am also a firm believer in a quick and humane kill, and I sure believe that a 7mm would do just that. Hope the ammo doesn't get too expensive for ya though. Happy hunting. =)

As stated a few times in the field it is not a problem to shoot.
When you are at the range it is diff. I am 6' 2" 250lbs and if it is not shouldered correclty it will let you know.

If you get a PAST recoil shield ($35) and use it at the range, you'll be fine. As the others said, you never feel recoil in the field. Personally, I'm very negative about muzzle breaks.

a 7mm isn't that bad, don't shoot 2 boxes of shells when you go out and it isn't bad.
the only gun i have found that i don't like shooting is one of my hunters rifles, a browning synthtic stocked .300 wsm.
weights right at 7 lbs with scope.
sucker hurts after a few shots but when your hunting you don't notice it.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I bought a Ruger 7mm Mag with the skeleton stock, The scope that came on it didn't have good eye relief and well long story short threw me some Balistic Silver Tips in there and went to town first shot got kissed right on the eyebrow (pretty good cut) from the scope needless to say I was scared before every shot then after. I guess I could have just bought a different scope but it did kick like a mule so I sold it and I bought me a Savage 10FP in 308 with a bull barrel and heavy stock doesn't kick near as bad... But congratz on gun any gun purchase is a good one.
