So my gf is really taking an interest in hunting. I have her outfitted camo/boots/thermals etc. and she has shown to be a pretty good shot with a rifle with some coaching. Target shooting is one thing but we all know how that changes when you're actually pulling the trigger in the field. Mechanics aside the first thing( in my mind) is where to actually aim at the deer based on how the deer is standing. "Behind the shoulder" can be a vast area in the mind of someone who has never shot a deer before....So the idea
What if I carried a good red dot laser pointer and actually gave her a red dot to aim at? Thoughts? Does anybody know of a make of laser pointer that would be good at 100 yards?

Buy a paper deer target that has the vital area's highlighted and let her practice. I had my daughter and wife practicing with these. I said shoot the smallest circle and they both shot the eyes out of their targets. lol... Then I explained not that circle look at the heart area. The got it now. I won't be making either one of them mad when they have a rifle though.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

I don't guess the laser is a bad idea. XTS sales some that will range upwards of. 400-500 yards Remember ..... Aim small miss small

Question is can you hold the laser steady enough at 100 yards for her to take aim at it? I would think that just a little movement in the laser coupled with just a little movement of the rifle would make it pretty frustrating to try to put the cross hairs on the red dot.
If he shot is completly broad side teach her to aim just behind the shoulder. If its quartering away her teach her to aim such that her bullet would exit through the deers opposite front shoulder. If quartering to put the shot through the deers nearest front shoulder.

Well...the "hold it steady" thing I already have figured out. I have an old fly fishing "fly tying stand" that will clamp directly to the window sill and another holder attachment that would hold the laser steady. It will act almost like a set of bino's on a tripod. I'm going to give it a try. Having a tangible target to aim at will hopefully help her confidence in the shot.

These are great to put in a camp or deer blind for new hunters to use as a guide. http://wildlifeenterprises.com/Aim.htmWhat we did with first time hunters is take them to the range to practice off the rest we used in the stands. Then when we got to the blind we took an unloaded rifle and let them practice squeezing off shots and allow them to use the scope on does around a feeder or on food plots. Talking them thru the "shot" and telling them to pick a spot and squeeze. When it got time to shoot we loaded the rifle and coached them thru the getting the crosshairs on the spot and squeezing the shot off with the rifle on safety again. While they had the rifle on the deer I took it off safety and told them to kill the deer BEFORE they had time to think about the shot. Here is our rest we had in each blind. Very simple to use and they hold the rifle very steady. With a milk crate to support you leg on so you can rest your trigger arm elbow on I have seen practiced shooters make 500 yrds shots off this rest.

I taught my son to shoot them in the armpit. He knows where to aim from that.

take her on a photo trip showing different angles and where good shot placement is. Have done that with new hunters and has worked well. there are enough pictures on the forum for that.
even used the dog for shot placement for one person who finally got it. on a dog it is easy to feel where the heart and lungs are and the vitals are in a very similar location on deer

They are made by a retired gentleman from Katy/Houston.

Tell her to shoot him in the neck. Winner, winner, chicken dinner. Dead on the spot every time with no tracking for me.
