I just joined the forum and was wondering if anyone had any input on the subject. I currently feed golden nuggets and am interested in something different possibly. I feed from a spin cast feeder and barrel. Any input is appreciated. Thanks

I use the deer pellets from our local producers co-op from a free choice feeder. Almost 700#'s gone in less than 3 months. Deer are chowing down and looking good.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

I used the Purina Antler Max moisture resistant in spin cast in the past with no issues. It's 20%. Just make sure you use one of those galvanized lids and remove the one that seals.
The Antler Max got too expensive for me, so I went to regular protein feeders and feed a 20% protein from the feed store.

I will use a locally made protein with 20% in the spring, then go to Record Rack starting around the first of June. And use ONLY a free choice (gravity) feeder.
The objective of protein is to supplement their diet.

We feed Total Deer made by Total Feeds at our place in the Panhandle. It's not cheap but the results we see in overall deer health and the number of twin fawns that reach maturity make it worth it. Every processor we take a deer to has the same question "where on earth did you get this FAT deer" They are very healthy and usually dress out at least 20lbs heavier than the average deer in that area. My wife's Mulie buck had been on it for 8 months before she shot it and was 17lbs heavier than the heaviest they had turned in and 25lbs heavier than the average.

You need to feed protein from a gravity feeder. If not its a waste of time and money
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

second the protein from gravity. and fence hogs out. I have seen a pic of a very large boar raised up onto his back legs eating out of a gravity feeder. Blew me away.

You need to feed protein from a gravity feeder. If not its a waste of time and money You don't need a gravity style feeder to be effective when feeding protein. Many use a homemade trough. Timered trough style protein feeders work very well also. To the OP, I would look at getting roasted soybeans and mix into your corn feeder. They can run in the upper 30% for protein content. Mixing them in as 50-50 mix with corn will still get you a very high protein value. Peas will also work well from a spin feeder and do not need to be mixed. They run in the mid 20% protein range. Both can be harder to find and can be expensive also. You can feed the same dollar amount per month in feed and do more when feeding less of soybeans/peas by volume.

My corn/pea experiment isn't going so good, the deer don't like the taste of the peas apparently

It is spring and there should be some sort of green-up for them to chase so anything you stick in front of them will take longer for them to try. It stays dry they will eat them.

Sounds good. I'll have try some of these suggestions out. I have two leases now so I can try out different ideas and see what's happening

The green up has started and they are tapering off my protien. They still come to it but not as good as earlier in the month. They are hitting tender natural forage. It may be another 2 to 3 months before they get back on the protien hard. The natural forage needs to get mature and bitter before they hit the protien again. They will eat a little until then but not like did during winter.

I started running a corn/Roasted Soy mix in my spin cast feeders this spring and they are tearing it up, even with free choice protein near by they hit the mix more.
The mix is $10.50/bag from the local old school feed store in La Grange.
