I would like your opinion on a pigeon tower shoot in central texas. I have a range set up for European pheasant hunts and offer several a year, but soon the pheasant loose their feathers. I would like to have this hunt one or two weeks before dove season like practice, but if there were a lot of people interested we could do one at any time. Just to clarify this will be a tower In the middle with shooting stations all around. The birds will be released from the tower In small groups. Generally people have a very hard time hitting pheasant out of the tower so I could only imagine pigeons speed. Although it is legal here In Texas this will be a invitation only. If you are very interested in participating contact me via email and we can discuss further details.

Welcome to the THF Bigjon. Here's a rookie question...what do you do with all the pigeons people shoot? I've never been to a pigeon shoot...just curious. I'm working on the assumption that y'all don't just leave them, lest the smell and flies become overwhelming a couple days later. Thanks

Well I have bird cleaners and there are several charity around that accept wild game meat. I donate several deer and pigs each year. I will contact them to make certain they would want the meat. I believe pigeons taste like dove just a little bigger breast. If you want to take home meat they will be cleaned and packaged for your departure. I will offer lunch as well.

Ok. I know in Europe and in Great Britain it is eaten as "squab", but didn't realize it was consumed here in the states. I thought maybe it was used for pet food or something. Thanks for answering, and best of luck to you.

The only ones I ever was involved w/were thrown Pigeons..and for
money..but some of them get quite large and expensive..I'm too old and slow on my reflex's now, but in my day, I did win some money..we also used to have a boxed bird shoot w/pen raised flight cond. quail..and we can eat them..last pigeon shoot we had
at the club, we had a 55 gal drum full of dead birds to burn..DD

Seems several years ago there was pigeon shoot in N Dallas county, some PETA folk with cameras got in as "guests" and took photos of wounded birds flopping around, created a lot of problems. Any one remember this happening?

I know of a club up here that did it. I haven't been there in a couple of years so they may still be doing it. The set up and timing was almost exactly the same. I think they called it a European Flighted Bird Shoot. There are still some box bird shoots around but it's kept real quite.

Don I bet you know one of my shooting buddies from Ft Hood. I used to shoot pretty regularly with Dick Pope, from 75 to 78, before I got transferred to Germany.

To make it really interesting you should pull the tail feathers out of those pigeons. They get very erratic.

Mickey you sound like you've been to a thrown bird shoot! I've heard about them but have never been.

First off, please don't shoot the messenger. csi

If you do a pigeon shoot, I would research it well for what you can do, what you can't do, including what protesters can and can't do. IMHO, I would not overly publicize it or I would make it more by invitation.

When they had the one in Carrollton years ago it was crazy with animal rights fighting it. More recently animal rights groups have been protesting and using drones at any pigeon shoot they can find. They are good at making things go viral by twisting the facts.

Research the pulling feathers before doing this. Animal rights have keyed on the wording in the Texas attorney general letter on the Carrollton Pigeon shoot.
https://www.oag.state.tx.us/opinions/opinions/49cornyn/op/1999/htm/jc0048.htm

And animal rights have used gambling laws as a weapon against pigeon shoots as well when an entry with a payout was advertised So this is something else you might want to research.

We got off topic, the OP was about having a pigeon tower, shoot not a box bird or thrown bird shoot. Generally they don't draw as much interest as the other two types of shoots. I would be careful of my wording when describing the shoot.

What is the difference in a tower pigeon shooting and thrown pigeon shooting different. the pigeons are thrown off the tower aren't they?

The Private Bird Hunting Area license says shooting pigeons is OK.
