Hard to say what you were doing wrong. Could have pulled the shot, closed your eyes before the shot, jerked the trigger, and a thousand other things. Shooting at 300 yards, your margin of error is greatly diminished and and any error you make is amplified. Do you know what distance your gun is zeroed at? Have you shot targets at that distance? When was the last time you sighted in the gun? Lots of questions on this one

yess 100 yds no and before opening day Have you ever shot at 300? Do you know the drop for your gun and bullet at 300 yards? Lots of variables to consider. The more you get into hunting and shooting you will start to learn things about the ballistics of your ammunition and how your gun should act at certain distances. For a standard 30-06 with a 165 grain bullet you should have anywhere from 9-13 inches of drop at a 300 yards with it sighted in at 100 yards. What grain bullet are you shooting? Better yet what ammo?

300yrds away on a hill crosing to the other side so i put the sight of my scope right on it shoulder One thing,,,up hill or downhill you need to hold low, NOT HIGH, or you will over shot target! Common Mistake Check Chuck Hawks for uphill downhill shooting http://www.chuckhawks.com/shooting_uphill.htm

I doubt he was shooting uphill enough to have made much difference.
He missed because he didn't know his ballistics, and possibly because he's never shot at that distance.
Also, how do you know it was 300 yards? Did you range it or guess?

If you don't know exactly where your rifle will hit at that distance, you should. Practice.

Practice at that distance at all.
There's a significant difference in 150 and 180 grains. When zeroed at 100 yards, there is substantial drop at 300. These are all things you'll need to learn and practice to consistently hit anything at that distance.

If you are using the 150 grain bullet, I'd sight the rifle in at 200, which should be somewhere around 1 1/2 inches high at 100 (I didn't look up the ballistics, because the wife has the iPad). At 300 yards your bullet drop should be about 8 inches below where the crosshairs are on the critter. Put the crosshairs high on the shoulder (but not over the shoulder) and let fly. You should be well within the desired impact area (lungs/heart).
Check your sights at several distances (100 and 200 if possible) and put your ballistics reminders (1.5 high at 100; on at 200; down 8 at 300) on a piece of masking tape and stick it to the top of your scope for quick field reference. And unless you are shooting at a pretty steep up or down angle, don't worry about change in impact point. If you ARE shooting an a steep upward angle, the bullet drop will depend on what the horizontal distance would be to target. In other words, if the 300 yard upward angled shot would really translate to 250 if it were on flat ground, aim with a hold for the 250 yards.

Edited.... as I see where you said you were sighted in at 100 yards. You cant sight in a 06 at 100 and be shooting on the shoulder at 300. You need to go somewhere where you can shoot 300 yards and see how much drop there is and its a bunch. Even the slightest error in your shot is off my a bunch with that combo at that distance.

There's a significant difference in 150 and 180 grains. When zeroed at 100 yards, there is substantial drop at 300. These are all things you'll need to learn and practice to consistently hit anything at that distance. actually there is no significant drop between the 150s and 180s. Wincester Super X 150gr "2920fps" and the 180gr are at "2700fps" your looking a 1.2/1.3 mill drop or 12.5"/14" The problem this young man had, is not knowing what his round would do at 300yrds based on his 100yrd zero and the rang time to varify it. 99% of deer hunting calibers will require a 1 mil hold at 300yrds. the "spread is 0.8-1.3 mills. A half mill is a fair amount of difference but given the size of the target (deer chest cavity at the shoulder) a one mill hold will get you in the kill zone everytime.

If your rifle was sighted in at 100 yards the bullet was probably 13" lower at 300 yards but the only way to really know is to sight it in at the range at that distance.

30-06 will drop hard at 300yrds sighted for 100yrds.... never liked the caliber because of that... the ones the hunters would use at the ranch i would sight in an 1 1/2 high at 100yrds....should put you pretty close at 200 and prolly 5 drop at 300 depending on your size of ammo
