I thought I'd share a bit of humorous experience I had yesterday morning on my first duck hunt.

First, although it was my first duck hunt, I've been hunting other game for a long time. Just have never gone duck hunting. Someone warned in another posting to stay away from duck hunting, as it's addictive...I now understand why. smile

Anyway, the story.

We hunted up North of Ray Roberts yesterday on a "stock tank". We set up early, put the decoys out, and sat in the cover along the bank. I was probably 10 feet, if that, from the water.

Right before first light, about 6:30 am, I hear the flapping of wings and then look at the decoys just in time to see a huge owl swooping down to attack a decoy, barely 10 feet in front of me. After he couldn't take the one away, he tried one next to it, then got frustrated, and lit on the bank right in front of me.

He looked around, dumbfounded, that he wasn't going to have a duck breakfast and then took off after we shined a flashlight on him.

I have to say it took me a few minutes to figure out what had happened. We were all thinking it was a duck landing on the tank early, until after we saw it try and take a duck. It was one of the craziest experiences I had seen when hunting.

Honestly, I had not thought about owls eating ducks before, but now, I can see they love duck like the rest of us. smile

Just thought I'd share the story.

Oh...we did get 14 ducks between the four of us. smile

Happy New Year!

the owl was probably two feet tall and had a pretty large wing span...it was fun to see.

maybe a foot and a half feet high.

I was hunting in a layout blind in a field last year and heard a wierd noise and looked up to see a hawk at about 5 feet. I think he saw my movement and thought I was lunch hiding in a brush pile..........Freaked me out.
