Hey all! I'm heading to Texas in a couple of weeks and am looking to hunt some West Texas Jack Rabbits. I'm a dedicated varmint hunter and would like to find some areas that have a decent population. I am looking for suggestions on where to start? I'll be in the Dallas area for a few days, but will head back west and up north towards Lubbock on my way to look for Prairie Dogs in New Mexico. Any areas, or leads you can suggest would be greatly appreciated! This will be hunting mainly with a 5mm Rimfire, as well as a PCP Airgun. Thanks in advance! Eric A. Mayer PS: Thanks for a great site! There is a lot of great information!

Wow, you are brave dude to hunt Jackrabbits with an airgun. I have seen them take a 7mm Mag in the lungs and still run to the next county. Naturally if you come across a Jackalope then you don't stand a chance unless you have a gunbearer with a .416 Rigby. Have fun.

You can hunt rabbits on public land at Elephant Mountain, Black Gap and San Angelo -- but only at certain times, and this is not one of the certain times. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/hunt/public/lands/table_contents/You could also check in the Outfitters & Guides forum for a W. Texas outfitter that does varmint hunts.

Thanks for the info, so far. I had one of those rare Jackalope mounts years ago. When I divorced my first wife I let her take everything but the mount. I figured I could sell it to Ripley's or some Natural History Museum if I needed some cash. Turns out I ended up giving it to one of my hunting buddies' kids. I told him there was no need to save up for college, just sell it after he gets accepted to Medical School! He was speechless at my generosity! Back to the Jack Rabbits! I will definitely post in the Guides forum. Any other leads would be appreciated! Eric
