Texas Parks and Wildlife Bowhunter Education Course
14-15 April 2012, Lake Whitney State Park

Texas Parks and Wildlife will be conducting a Bowhunter Education course at Lake Whitney State Park, Whitney TX, Saturday and Sunday, 14-15 April 2012. Upon successful completion of this course, students will earn the International Bowhunter Education Program certification. This certification is required for some state requirements as well as some Federal lands in Texas. It’s also a chance to get a new archer/bowhunter on the right path.

You don’t need to be a “seasoned” bowhunter to take this course, and it’s not just a safety class. Yes, safety is covered, and so are sections covering game laws/ethics, equipment, methods, shot placement, etc.

Class will be held at Campsite (shelter) #17. A map is available online and at the State Park entrance. All students will have the daily Park access fees waived. Camping is also available at standard rates.

Start time for Saturday is 8:00am. Saturday classroom will last until approximately 4:00pm. For the two day class participants Sunday will start at 8:30am and will conclude around 1:00/2:00pm. Promptness is appreciated for the class start times.

For Saturday all you need to bring is yourself, and whatever you may need for the day (water, etc). We’ll take a lunch break. If you fancy yourself with a game call, you are welcome to bring it as we will have a chance to demo them during one of the segments.

For Sunday, you’ll need your archery equipment (field points only-NO broadheads), dress appropriately as we’ll be outside for a while. Suggestions-sunscreen, hat, jacket, water, walking shoes/boots, etc.

During the Sunday class we will be shooting a few arrows to assess the Saturday session. If a participant doesn’t have his/her own archery equipment we can provide enough equipment to allow you to complete the course. The rules during the archery shoot will be strict due to waiver requirements required for use in the State Park facilities.

For those that may have already completed the approved home study course, Sunday 07:30am-@12:00/1:00pm would be your only day (field day qualifier). Make sure you bring printed proof of the home study completion (field day qualifier certificate).

For all in attendance the fee will be $15.00 as published by the Texas Parks and Wildlife. Pre-registration is required. We are not requiring pre-payment, please attend if you register as the number of registered participants will determine the number of instructors required. For pre-registration/additional information please contact Doug at 817-223-2839/DHL-Archery@sbcglobal.net

It's a good course, I'd encourage anyone to take it. I took it last summer; had a good time and learned a lot.

What does the shooting part of the course require? Just that the shooter can effectively draw the bow and hit inside the vitals of a deer at different yardages?

No idea why, I didn't have to have anything but a hunting license, maybe cause I'm older than dirt? I only went once last dove season; but I doubt I'll ever go back. I really don't like public hunting.

The one I went to in Camp Bullis in San Antonio the only purpose was to ensure that your bow was in good working order and not a deathtrap basically....hitting the target helps though. They didn't even have deer targets at the one I went to just generic hay bale type targets.

The shooting session is a recommended part of the course, it's not scored, just demonstrate safety, etc.

Bowhunter education isn't required in Texas, except for some Federal lands. It is required in some other states.

Up to the top. It appears we have about 6 interested, so I'd consider the class a go.

I'll send an email to all a week or two prior to the class for a reminder and/or as soon as possible if something changes.

As far as I know the only thing that wasn't on my list of what to bring maybe your favorite camp chair. I'll have tables rounded up, but low on chairs.
