After coyote calling this morning, I found one of the pastures I hunt covered in snow geese on both sides of the road. Grabbed the shotgun and a handfull of BB shot shells and belly crawled about a hundred yards into the field to get cover by the only tree present. I laid down and waited for a long while until some birds on the other side of the road decided to switch membership and join the gaggle I was overlooking. As they flew within range I popped up and dropped 2. Both fields erupted in a multitude of feathers and sound similar to the roar of a football stadium. I stood awestruck watching them fill the sky. It's impossible to stand before that many birds and not appreciate their natural wonder.

Nice job!

To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.

You might check this out; it used to be ilegal to stalk geese. Be careful what you post; someone may be watching. Is the small goose on the right a ross?

I have never seen nor heard anything about that, nonetheless I laid out in the middle of the two flocks and shot these out of the air as they came over to join the other flock. I used a plugged 12g with steel shot. It seems legal and ethical to me, especially with the sheet numbers of geese population and the crop damage they do.

Yes, that is a ross goose. Small body, shorter neck, and smaller beak.

Watch the direction they are feeding. Get ahead of them and hide. When they get close get ya some. It aint easy carrying 9 big snows out of a muddy blackland wheat field.

It ain't easy being me.

There are more Ducks and Geese this year than in anytime in RECORDED history. Canadian prairie-potholes were full of water last spring leading to a bumper crop of birds. I believe that USFWS even allows electronic callers these days for hunting.
