I'm New to Texas and stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso. I'm looking for a place I can drive out to and hunt White tail without all the guides or special permits. Is it true if there ain't a fence or sign posted off the highway I can hunt that land? Trying not to go much further than Reeve county. Any Ideas

Ok, so here's the deal. 99.9% of land in Texas is privately owned. The Remaing .1% is held by some governmental entity. So, the bottle line is this, if the land ain't yours and you don't know who owns it, much less have permission to be on it, then you are trespassing. In Texas if you are trespassing with a firearm the penalty is enhanced. If you're trespassing with a firearm and have killed any game it's enhanced.
Trespassing is not taken lightly in Texas. I would highly recommend not doing it.
Find a day lease or get a hunting lease or get permission from a landowner and do it the right way.

Welcome to Texas. Cross our borders, but not our fence lines.

please DO NOT just get out of your truck and start walking and hunting, and tell whoever told you that it was ok to hunt like that they they are dead wrong, Find you a day lease, try to get to know a land owner and ask permission. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE,,,, What state are you from?

Your license "permit" is free so go get you one at a Wal Mart, no hassle there. You have access to all the military land in town just go down to the Rod n Gun club to get the info. Its free! There arent any whitetails but its "hassle free".

Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

Thanks very much everyone, even the sarcasm was in a way helpful. ha, ha. milanotx; I'm from Washington state. mulie_mike; the permit I was referring to was not the license. From what I understood from reading, to hunt a lot of public land you need to draw an additional permit. I may have misunderstood that. I'll look into the day lease thanks again.

Look at some newspapers online and find a day lease as close as you need it ti be and contact the people and try to set up a hunt. Not much free in Texas and all deadlines have passed for any hunts obtained through any type of drawings. Try the San ANgelo paper and others in that area.

Some of the public land you need to be drawn to hunt on, others are a matter of just hunting it and following the rules and regulations. There used to be a Type 2 permit that you bought that entitled you to hunt this type of land. Not sure if that is still how it is done. Check into it a little more and Im sure you can find some public land you can hunt. It it tough going but can be done. Good luck and welcome to Texas.
