Can you use a deer feeder for Turkey (ex. Milo/Scratch/Corn/etc.)

If not, what is the optimum feeder route for turkey?

Yup you can, but I close the opening down a little for teh scratch. Do it every year for 3 feeders prior to and through Turkey season

As long as the game bird is not migratory, you can.

I've seen as many as 25-30 turkeys come running in when the feeder goes off and clean up every kernel before the deer could get to it.

It you already have a spin feeder it will work and is cheaper than buying another one.

My neighbors do this and they have about 20-30 (no lie) turkeys that hang out on their property. One was walking up my driveway the other day, and I thought "I could shoot that and have it for Thanksgiving..." I am a recent transplant from the DFW area to the TX Hill Country, so this is all new to me. What would you have to do to a turkey to keep it from tasting 'gamey', or is that even an issue with turkeys who are grain fed?

Wild turkeys do not taste as good as a turkey you buy in the store.

Fry it

Sounds like a plan.

Another question.....I've got approximately 120 acres of high plateau property (very flat w/cedar/cactus/some native grass)...and 80 acres of low draw property (VERY thick cover...primarily cedar).

Does it matter where I might set up the feeders to maximize luring/keeping Turkeys onto my ranch?

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated!

we've got one area of our ranch that the turkeys seem to prefer. We mix in a couple of bags of milo with the corn in the feeder. There are around 50 birds in the group that frequents that area. The feeder going off is like the dinner bell.

Where do they roost? Figure that out and it will make the choice easier. Turkeys usually don't get into real thick stuff. Too easy for something to get them. They need some room to get the wings flapping if they need to get gone in a hurry.

We had very few big trees on one of the ranches I guided on, so the turkeys roosted on cross beams on a double power pole line that crossed the property at a long shallow angle. There were certain cross beams that were used more than others. If you have a deal like that, check closely because on other cross beams is where the black headed buzzards roosted. If you check them out with binos you can tell the difference.

Try to find out where they like to loaf midday. That is another option for a feeder. If your draw has oaks of some kind I would check it to see if that's where they roost. They don't always fly down the same way, nor do they take the same circuit when they go foraging during the day. But, if home is on your lease you will see repeats, periodically, in the directions they go once they are on the ground.

Got livestock? Check to see if you have any cowpies that when they dried are upside down. Turkeys do that to get the bugs underneath the cow pie.
