Well I gt to thinking and with duck season getting closer what would be a good way to get back in the swing of things as far as shooting out of layouts. Well I think dove hunting outmof layouts should help alot. Might be a little tougher but should be able to beat the rust off.

Anyone ever dove hunt out of their layout blinds?

I went to the skeet range when it was slow. Sat on the ground inside of station 8 and took turns shooting high and low house. Coming and going.

Yall take this more serious than I do I guess if you are shooting clays on the ground. I shoot and hunt for fun and shooting clays on the ground doesnt sound fun. I'll take my chances.

Its not about taking chances its just about being prepared. I think we all hunt for fun and preparing for a hunt is just as much fun for me. Then again most people who hunt "for fun" never really come back with anything. bolt

I was/am jacked with heavily for doing the same thing Rob. People can say what they want but I learned a lot about positioning the blind and what I was doing wrong.

I belong to a club so it wasn't like going to Elm Fork and plopping down a layout grin

I shot clay all summer and always shoot with my gun un-mounted, practicing your mount goes a long ways in helping you with hunting. Practice mounting in front of the mirror is dang near as good of practice as shooting clay. I have never shot clay from a layout blind, but I have done practice mounts in my backyard and garage, that is what I would suggest.

Here is a tip for you as well. Say your kill zone/swing range is 10:00 to 2:00. Most people set their layout blind strait ahead with bottom of blind pointing at 12:00. With layout like this, for a right handed shooter, your 12:00 to 2:00 type shot is awkward. You are much better off pointing your blind at an angle say 2:00, then your 10 to 2 oclcok swing is much better, try it you will know what I mean.

It is the same thing I see with people sitting on a chair or stool hunting. They point their chair strait ahead. If there is a 2:00 shot and you are facing 12:00, that is an awkward shot sitting, with a chair you can get away with it by standing up and steping into the direction you want to shoot with your left foot, but you can’t do that in a layout blind. When I sit in a chair hunting, I also point chair at an angle at 2:00, and most of my shots I make sitting down, but if I stand up, my left foot is already forward. Also when you sit at an angle as described, your gun is pointed down field instead of your buddy to your left.

Wrong forum you sick puppy! nuts

You're right about setup. Angle is key, don't point straight ahead cuz you're cutting off a big chunk of your weak side. Especially when you're all bundled up and can't twist all that well.

Don't over think it - get the stock on your shoulder and head down and let 'er rip. Doesn't matter how you started (laying, sitting, standing) as long as you end up right.

Here is a pic of an example, dove hunting open weekend, chair facing 2:00, gun naturally rests/points strait ahead..

You must love your layout blind. For the record, I hate them, only use them when needed. I can't drink my coffee in one. With dove they are not needed. You would have killed just as many dove with no layout, just sit still, all you need to do with dove. With duck, I would much rather sit in natural cover on a marsh stool (what I normally use), use layout only when there is no cover, a last resort...

Nice...you think I don't shoot birds..thats clever. Just because I don't want to shoot clays out of a layout doesnt mean I'm not prepared...it's silly to assume that. I've shot from a layout enough to be comfortable with it. Could I get better....sure...but are my results seriously suffering because I'm not shooting clays from a layout ahh NO. Honestly shooting is about the easiest part of any hunt for me and I think most people could say the same. However for newcomers to the sport I agree shooting needs to be addressed and practiced.

The best way I have found to improve shooting is to practice mount the gun with your eye on a lateral line, after mount swing through the lateral line. The schwing is the thing!!!

I think I have met you before TX. About 5, 6 years ago on some type 2 land out east of Dallas opening day of dove season..

You came out of some tall grass in a gillie suit face paint..

Remember me we talked for a few? I was wearing shorts shoes and a dove vest.
