Shopping around for an AR, looking at the different options that it comes in and need some help deciding on what caliber to choose. Caught on the fence in between 6.8 and .223. I like the idea of the stopping power of the 6.8 but the .223 is cheaper per round. what do yall think?

Being that you are located in Austin, you're caliber choice won't be limited by ammo availability so that opens things up a bit. If it's simply about economics, then you're right about the .223/5.56
I have AR's in 5.56, 6.8 & .308 and have taken hogs with all of them. I've also killed a ton with my wife's .243 bolt gun.
Ed (ZenArchery) has been putting them in the dirt with his 7.62 x 39 lately.
Bigger is better, but shot placement is best. You can reasonably expect to take hogs with any of the calibers mentioned if you put it in the right spot consistently.
Good luck and post up your 1st AR kill.

5.56x45/.223 works with right shot placement. My preference is a .308/AR-10 You might look into an AK-type design as well. I have a saiga 5.45x39 that's very accurate and I absolutely love--ammo is only about $0.11 cents a round for surplus too

Get a 6.5 Grendel Upper for your AR-15 Lower. Will probably outdo all above mentioned calibers.IMO. or go to the 450Bushmaster upper for 200yds and less.

I've seen this type of question a lot, and I've also wondered which one to get myself. I've read you can kill a hog with a .22 with the right placement, but I think a lot of people are wanting something where they can just open fire with a full mag of ammo on a group of hogs and kill about 5 or 6 of them! But in all the videos I've seen once you fire the first shot the hogs scatter like roaches and your probably lucky to even get off another couple of rounds.
Is it possible to open fire and just rain bullets on a group of hogs with a 5.56 and kill bunch of them?

But in all the videos I've seen once you fire the first shot the hogs scatter like roaches and your probably lucky to even get off another couple of rounds. they do scatter. but given the right circumstances. being able to acquire the next target and pull the trigger is much better then re-chambering a round, setting into you sight, acquiring target and repeating the process. .Is it possible to open fire and just rain bullets on a group of hogs with a 5.56 and kill bunch of them? Anything is possible. But if you know their path I've learned 90% of the time they will run back the same direction they have entered in. That being said, I always aim for the guy in back first and can almost leave my sight in the same position and have the next one walk right into. Just my observation.

25 WSSM. I just got my Olympic arms upper in 25 WSSM. It's like a 25-06 semiautomatic. Can't wait to try it out. The Barnes 100gr will be going almost 3200 fps.
