I'm not too familiar with hunting/larger caliber rounds so keep that in mind. Most of my focus up to this point has been in pistols.
So, that said.......I've been researching bolt actions and had pretty much decided that I would end up with a 308.
Well, while at Cabela's today with a friend we found a good deal on a 270. He said that the 270 would do everything I want it to do and more.
How accurate is this?
Yes, I want to use it the thin out those nasty porkers we have around here.

While we were there I checked out the specs on the same brand and model of 270 and 308...both with the same weight projectile.
What I noticed is that the 270 had a slight advantage in the velocity and energy departments over the 308 but seemed to be stronger than the 308 the further down range it traveled.
How important is all this?
Which do you/would you prefer.

The sales person was right. A .270 will do everything a .308 can do, the thing he probably didnt mention is the fact that ammo is going to be much higher for the .270.

You can find surplus 7.62x51 and cheaper .308 stuff (like monarch). I've never seen a cheap .270 round.

Also, what type of actions do you prefer? Personally i like short actions better(.308), in comparison to long action(.270).

Both are great rounds, both will do the job, they just go about it in different ways.

Federal .270Win at Walmart is less than $13 a box. About $16 for .308. I'd rather shoot that than surplus. The only possible negatives are that it is a long action and recoil is more than on .308. Nothing wrong with either round. If you were a reloader, which it sounds you're not, 6.5x55 would beat both. It's a long action but much less recoil and it will show its superiority once you start shooting long range. If you only hunt and don't do long range, pick the rifle you like first and then see what caliber it is available.

Of course, if you only hunt Texas size game, a .243 would do and is a more versatile round than either .270 or .308. I don't mean to distract you but since you posted in this sub-forum, a smaller bore caliber like .243 in short action might be your best choice. Seeing that you found a .270 at a good price and are tempted to buy it, go ahead, don't let the caliber stop you as it will do everything a .308 will do.

.308 for bullet choices.

.270 has a smaller and faster bullet (most folks don't seem to use the 150) which can lead to more meat destruction so do some research on which bullet to use. You may not get away with the cheaper choices unless you don't mind losing some meat.

They will both get the job done, and the .270 has a little less bullet drop.

If you want to hit the "easy" button and bypass a bunch of turns, get an AR10 based .308 semi-auto rifle. They are accurate and just a few dollars more. The semi-auto gas feeding eats up some of the recoil too.

And the 308 will do everything you want and more as well. The two are so close in performance it isnt worth trying to decide. Buy the first one you find that is a good deal on the gun you want. It is more personal preference than anything.

Not that it matters in this context but the 270 was introduced in the 1920's. The 308 was introduced in the 1950's.

With a 150gr bullet in both, it's not likely that you or the hogs will ever notice a difference.

And to address a few things....no, I wont be doing any long range shooting. Even a 100 yrd shot seems like it would be a bit of a rarity. Yes, only Texas game....I won't be going after any elk or brown bears any time soon.
The AR based models would be nice but I think I would be just as happy with a good bolt action without having to spend 1200.00+ on a rifle before putting any glass on it.
I've heard good things from another friend about Savage and have been looking in to those a bit. Of course the Rem 700 also appeals to me and is a proven weapon so who knows....I've still got some pondering to do on this before I head to the ranch.

i have both as said hog want know the which round hits him ,take the rifle in eathier cal that feels best and is the deal, if you got a deal on 270 and you like the gun get it no one in texas could go wrong with 308 or 270

.308, you can do more with it and the ammo is cheaper. Load data is widely available. It'll knock a pig out quickly too. I think you wouldn't regret a .308 purchase.

neither one of those will penetrate a hogs body armor....better get something bigger...

Just FYI, I have a Stevens 200 .270 that is basically a econo model of Savage 110. No-frills 3-9x40 Bushnell Elite 3200 on top of it with a basic duplex reticle. Took it to range and asked a friend what a drop on his .308 was for the target at 400 yards. Since the .270 will shoot flatter, estimated an approximate drop for the factory .270 load that I had measured to be around 3200 fps.

Time to shoot, target was about 18" tall, 5" wide. Estimated hold over on the scope which isn't a mil-dot so not too many options. First shot, ding, it's a hit. It isn't the prettiest rifle out there, stock and trigger also could be better, but for the money it's a damn accurate utility rifle! I think I have $400-500 in the complete setup that includes the scope, rings, bases, sling etc. All bought brand new.
