For the quality of the meat, axis is best, hands down. Elk and red deer tie for second. Now for sheer volume of edible meat, elk is hard to beat, and it's much tastier than whitetail. But for a primo tenderloin with an Oregon pinot noir, go axis.

Get a cow elk. It will keep you in the meat for a lot longer than an axis. I prefe axis but it would take about four-five of them to equal a cow elk.

We actually like Elk better than Axis, but it's a close call. As far as $ per pound, Elk wins hands down. The last Cow Elk I shot for my freezer netted 150 pounds of little white packages. We shot one last summer with a dressed weight of 402 pounds. That's a whole lot of Axis!!!

Axis, and whitetail are browsers eating grass, corn, vines, berries and at times cedar. Elk will eat these things in hard times but are mainly grazers like cattle composing their diets mostly grasses. The elk is the best wild game meat going.

Check into that Axis are grazers also. Whitetail and Mullies are browsers

Axis are grazers. Alfalfa draws them fairly well.

Grazer's taste better than browsers. Although i shot a mulie in nebraska that was all corn fed, pretty good.

To be more specific.....Axis are both grazers AND browsers. They prefer to graze on grasses.....but will switch to browsing when necessary.

I agree axis are mainly grazers they will eat other sources of food during rough times. But if we ever get a good rain we do not see AXIS AT THE FEEDERS, they will stay in the fields which are full of new growth.

Just got my first red deer hind last month, so I'd have to rate them as:

1. ELK
2. RED DEER
3. AXIS
4. NILGAI
5. ORYX

For me.....Axis is in a tie for first place with Eland. There is simply no steak on this planet that can beat an Eland filet.

1. Eland (tie)
1. Axis (tie)
3. Oryx
4. Elk
5. Buffalo

X2 - Dont forget about Black Buck. Those are tasty critters as well. Just small.
