I just read a great thread on this somehwere, let me see if I can dig it up.
There are so many factors at play but anywhere from 10% to 20% just depending how well of a job your guide/outfitter did.

I offer primarily free range hunts and also preserve hunts on 1 million acres across west and southwest Texas for native and exotic game.

In my experience the guide usually appreciates a 10% gratuity. although any and all are appreciated. Last year an older gentleman that I was guiding took my rangefinder off of the dash of the truck and placed it in the floor of the truck. When he got out to get in the high seat he accidentally kicked my rangefinder out of the cab of the truck and I ran over it. He never said he was sorry or offered to replace it. He and his protoge' had sucessful hunts ( his buddy shot 165in muledeer and he had opportunity at a monster but he could not get his reloads to chamber and the deer got away without a shot fired). His buddy tipped $100 and he told me if I send my RF to Nikon they might replace it eek2. He did not tip at all. Sometime you just have to chalk it up to experiences of being a guide.

When you spend a week with a party of hunters and you get them what they came for, ya it does stink to at least not be told "Thank you!" along with a handshake. It just seems common courtesy to me to at least say that much and tell the guide that you do appreciate all he/she has done. It's not forgotten.

I don't expect money for gratitude or tip. I do expect a "Thank You!" when I have done my job and they had a good time.

Where I live and hunt it is mostly elk hunting. Guides work for maybe 200.00 a day for an outfitter. The good outfitters lower the price on their hunts enough to allow the hunter some extra money to tip the guide if they did a good job. It works alot better when the guides know they have to impress to make their money! When you get a client that don't tip its time to decide if the guide sucks or the hunter shouldn't be invited back.

Only been guided deer hunting.
Went on 5 day hunt.
2 hunters per guide.
Awesome guide and got a huge buck.
Only stayed 3 days.
I had planned on tipping $100 per day.
I gave the guy $500 though. So did my buddy.
Awesome guy, had a great time. He treated us right so we treated him right.

I've guided and been guided. I usually tip at least 10% on a high end hunt and a little more on less expensisve outings like fishing trips. If I get great service or take an exceptional animal I've gone as high as 20%.

On the receiving end I've got as little as a handshake and as much as 25%. Both cases the hunter got a buck of a lifetime. That said, I have never solicated a tip, and don't bank on them in any fashion.

I have been on hunts and guided hunts. I usually tip 10% if I feel the guide put his time in. Some guys I know tip from $100 to $250 per day. I have been tipped the handshake and as much 20% on a kill or non-kill hunt. Most place I know where the landowner or outfitter is doing the guiding those guys tell me they hardly ever get a tip.

Yep, it is what it is. I do a lot of my own guiding to keep costs down which are passed onto the customers in the form of lower hunt fees, not my pockets. I also have a guide that works for me. If we have two hunters in and I guide one and my guide takes care of the other one, it almost always results in him getting a nice tip and me getting nothing. I cant tell you how many people I have put on their best buck ever and at the end of the trip I get the tip of the cap. The gratitude and how someone conducts themselves while at my place is what is most important. Tip or not, I can say in the 5 years I have been doing this, I only have run into one party that I would never have back (they have begged and it aint gonna happen). I am thankful for only one bad experience. My best tip came from a gentleman that did not take a buck but said he thoroughly enjoyed himself and my operation and immediately rebooked for next season. Like was said earlier, dont expect anything, there is no ryhme or reason to tipping. The guys with the most money or those that take the biggest bucks can be the crappiest tippers and those with the least or leaving without a buck can be the best. When asked about tipping, I always advise my clients to tip to their means and how they felt their trip went and that is good enough.

To the OP I think 10% is a good place to start and then go up or down depending on your experience.

I have been on more guided fishing trips on the coast than I have guided hunting trips, but I have tipped anywhere from 10% to 25%. If the guy is busting his tail to get you on good fish/game, show him you appreciate his effort.

Usually the ones who tip the worst are the most trouble. The people who usually tip the best are the ones that ask the least of you I never understood this.

0% for crappy service and lack of trying to put us on an animal
10% for Good service
15% for Great service
20%-30% for Exceptional service

Normally the % is of the total price of the hunt. If I spend $7000 on a hunt, then is normally around $1000 tip for the main guide and some small tips for support staff....Also I want to tip the guide that is doing the work, not the outfitter that setup the hunt...they did not do anything besides setup the hunt. The guides do the real work.

Depends on how the trip went. I have gone on some guided fishing trips where the guide had us on fish all day long, he got a good tip. I have been on one's where we didnt get anything on the line all day, they get jack.

Way I see it is with a guide I am paying for their experience. If they have none and dont know what they are doing then why reward them above and beyond?
