I just got My second GSP and she is 6weeks old, but tail wasn't docked, was wondering if you would dock it or not?? She will be a family dog,

My dog's tailed was docked at 4 weeks old. If your GSP is going to be a family dog, I wouldn't worry to much about docking. Check out wikipedia and you will notice it is done for reading the dog's communication while in the field. (It also ensures the tail wont get slammed in your house/vehicle doors) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Shorthaired_Pointer

When I'm hunting in thick stuff, I wish my GSP's tail wasn't docked! For a family dog, no worries,don't dock.

Correct me if I'm wrong but from what I've read tail docking is generally done on puppies 2 to 5 days old without the use of any sort of anesthesia, and is done to prevent injuries to to the tail while afield. If you had it docked now at six weeks of age, more than likely the vet would have to put the dog under and it would be a lot more painful of an experience for the dog than if it was done earlier.

You can dock their tail and get a trained dog. He will be trained not bark anymore.
Just Dock them behind the ears...HAHA....UB

Although a completely different breed, when my wife got our first cocker spaniel his tail wasn't docked. We had it done at 11 weeks old and he didn't act like it bothered him at all. He did have to be put under to have it removed but we didn't have any ill effects. Matter of fact he never chewed on the bandage and we had his dew claws done at the same time.

IMO this is irresponsible breeding. Did the breeder bother with the dew claws or leave them intact also? Hopefully the dog will never need "re-homing" or get lost and sent to a shelter. Now it's value will be diminished as it will not stand out as easily for being a pure bred animal. The short tail would help identify the dog as being a more unique, and therefor a more desirable, specimen of the breed as opposed to just another dog with a possible questionable heritage. My vet charges $10 per pup to do their tails and dew claws when they are 2 days old.
Why not just do it right as a breeder?

I think most people consider all dogs at shelters or breed rescues of unknown parentage without assumptions about being pure bred. I've never heard of anyone getting papers from a shelter. Not to mention the dogs are usually sterilized before they are adopted.
If you were commenting on the breeder being irresponsible, I can see that. A responsible breeder should have dewclaws removed and tails docked within a few days of birth. They should also be de-wormed, and had the first round of shots.
Since the dog will be a pet I don't see any reason to dock the tail at this point.

Izzy is my first dog with a docked tail. I really like it better in the house. Not as many drinks get spilled from the coffee table. That is about the only reason (if it is a reason at all) to have it done to a pet.

Unfortunately, the majority of shelters still have to "make room" for other animals and the longer an unrecognized pure bred dog stays there the less likely it is the animal will live.

it is so easy to do tails and dew claws, 2-3 days, don't have to make a trip to the vet.
