What Happened 2 Weather this past Sat?
The RUT has begun just west of Grapeland Area!

Did the cold front arrive before, on, or after Sat 10-16-9??
The cooler temps and the change in barometric pressure REALLY had the deer on the move all day Sat!
I have the print out of Fri Night Low 51 with Winds N at 5-10mph. Sat = High 71, Lo2 45, Mainly Sunny, Winds NNE at 10-15mph.

I saw the first 3.5 yrd old and 4.5 yr old buck this year so far. The 4.5 yr buck was checking the does. He popped up behind me took off as fast as he arrived, and I wasn't able to draw my bow! Dang!
There were four or five bucks and four does all around me eat'n acorns all by 8:45-9:00 am.
Opening weekend I didn't see but one doe.
I got a few picts of the smaller bucks and a spike.
SUN morn, two does busted me and it was downhill from there.

I will be heading down to the lease on the 23ed and I fully expect the peak of the rut to occur that week!

I hear people all the time tell me they rut around thanksgiving in my area, but if I had a millon bucks I would bet them they were wrong! Usually by thanksgiving the deer in my area aint even paying any attention to doe anymore!

I'm glad your action has picked up. With the increased activity, you should get your buck.

Be kind with your words, thankful to your Creator and generous with the meat from your hunt.

I hunt very near you (same CR) NeonDion. Things should be heating up, give it a few more weeks and it should be full on!

Yo Redirt Drifter,
When I said "The 4.5 yr buck was checking the does"
My bad, not enough info, I meant to say he ran in to check the does, and started chasing one of them all over the place (not w/in bow range), 15 min later I saw him going south (still out of bow range, over 50 yds).

Additionally we go to see a buck across the Trinity River,
He was "FEVERishly chasing a Doe", so hard of a chase that she went from running along the river, that she JUMPED INTO THE RIVER! The buck hot on her trail. Four times she got out of the river, then back into it for another swim. Each time she swam at least 20 yds (fast current).
She could NOT shake him, and they did this until the river makes a hard west turn, and we couldn't see them anymore.
I think the owners daughter took picts of the two deer swimming w/her new DSLR. I forgot to ask her.
It was awesome seeing 1) Buck after a hot doe, 2) deer swimming!

Yo Tres, The owner says it's Houston County. He's owned the place 25-30 yrs.
What County are you in?
From Palestine, I take 322 south.
I recall seeing one road that says Anderson about 3/4ths to the place. the last 2 CR signs to the place are all shot up and faded that I can't tell.

On our place in walker/houton county the rut has been a couple weeks later than it used to be. We can usually tell because we go from seeing mostly does and 1-2 year old bucks to seeing almost no does and the 3-5 year old boys roaming. They say 10% go into heat early and 10% percent late even in the ideal buck to doe ratio. We have a 1 to .9 buck to doe ratio but we havent seen the slightest sign of rutting activity so far. Im headed up there in the morning maybe my luck will change. (2500 acres, Mld 3 for 15 years)

Hi Tres,
I take 322 from Palestine all the way south.
It winds up on CR 2260 which meets up at a "t" with FM227.
smile I'm between that T and the trinity River.
The owner is going to sell a portion of it (50 acres?)

I hunt in Anderson County just a stones throw from Houston County. Have seen several small bucks hanging in groups. My best friend came down this past weekend to hunt and had an old big 10 pointer come in behind him, just stompin and constantly grunting. Couldn't get a shot, but the buck passed 20 yards behind him and could have cared less about anything. Nose to the ground constantly grunting...Usually see bucks chasing does in the 2nd week of November, but looks like they are getting geared up anyway.

rut already? way to early... Weather doesn't dictate the rut, just increases movement/activity. Moon cycles and daylight says the ole timers..

Yes dogo, I totally agree with the Rut is affected by Moon Cycles.
On Sat 10-17 it was a New Moon.

In past years, I also have experienced 3 other times where the barometric pressure dramatically changed (due to a Front that blew in). On those days, the Bucks were everywhere!

Check out this moonphases by QuickPhase Pro.

I missed a big 10 pointer two years ago on Nov. 11th that was hellbent on chasing does and my brother missed a similar one last year on the 12th. Same situation, so we plan on that. However I talked to my brother this morning and that monster 10 pointer came in behind him this morning and just looked at him and walked off grunting, nose to the ground, give you an update after this weekend as to what phase they are in, but it looks like they are in pre rut now in Anderson County

DiabloBH, I think I'm gonna take tomorrow off and hunt Friday, then on Sat go check out a new place in Oklahoma.
Yes, Please report back w/the Anderson Co. rut phase.

Anderson county rut should be in full swing right now I would think! I hunted there for a few years and they usually rutted right before the first of November!

Rut is not affected by temperature and weather, it has more to do with amount of daylight (the days getting shorter), and lunar cycles do also play a role. People always just assume when it gets colder the rut begins, but it actually just coincidence that cooler weather accompanies the shortening of daylight. Its been scientifically documented.

Tres and Diablo, any report on the rut?

I personally didn't see much rut activity this time around.
The owner is seeing bucks chasing does in the orchard - right behind his house - pretty open area!
