Quick story:

I walk my dog almost every evening in and around some fields that border several hundred acres of woods in Brazoria County. Fields are very heavily brushed - overall it's a really good setup for deer, hogs and dove. Obviously, hunting is not allowed.

With that said, I do a fair amount of scouting, and this past Sunday I was running my dog in one of the fields, when I see a police officer driving towards me and slowing down. I call for my dog and immediately head towards the officer, knowing that he probably suspects I'm hunting or something.

At first, the officer isn't real pleased with what I'm doing. Though it's obvious I'm not deer hunting with my dog and a bright yellow shirt, he questions me for awhile. As he lightens up, the conversation changes to deer and hogs we've each seen in the neighborhood. The biggest buck I've seen was a very heavy 8-pt, almost identical to the one "ruger270" took with his bow a couple of weeks ago.

The officer replies, "Oh, so you haven't seen him yet?" Clearly I am intrigued by who "him" is. I respond that I have seen some very big tracks, and the officer asks me to point some out, which after a few minutes of searching one of the cleared areas, I do. He just sort of laughs, as the track is really quite large.

"Yup, I'm pretty sure that's him."

The officer goes on to explain that "him" is a 7-8 year old 14-pt that he has been following for 5 or so years. Tells me that last year he was a 12-pt that probably would've scored in the mid-160s, and he's added 2 big kickers. Naturally, I am skeptical, but I'm not joking when I say these are probably the biggest set of buck tracks I've ever seen, South Texas premier hunting ranches included. Obviously a huge deer.

Well, Sunday night I decide to take my chances of seeing the buck. According the to police officer, every night he crosses from the tract of woods to the open fields as many deer do, and then he retreats back to the woods at first light each morning. So I perched myself right along the road in between the woods and field at about 6:30 and waited for the old fella.

Officer wasn't lying. Right before dark, movement catches my eye about 150 yards down the road from me along the woods line (in case anyone is wondering why cars haven't scared it, this section of road is still under construction and isn't open). An absolute montrosity of a buck slowly crosses the road into the field and then actually beds down about 50 yards into the brush. I didn't follow him in there to get a better look as it was almost completely dark outside, so I cannot confirm the 14 points.

I can, however, confirm an absolutely massive buck with a huge set of antlers that have great mass and height on them. If he is truly 14 points with the characteristics I saw from his profile, he's easily a 170+. I know that's tough to believe, but I've had the pleasure of hunting some outstanding South Texas ranches and have seen plenty of 150s every year. This guy is much bigger.

Not bad for a free-range, unfed neighborhood buck. Anyway, I'll be camped along the road every night with my telephoto lense hoping the get a picture. Going to be tough, as he can come out of the woods anywhere along about a 600-yard border. Sunday night I got lucky - didn't see him Monday or tonight.

Apparently the cops see him fairly frequently, so now that I know he's there, I'm hoping I can catch him snoozing.

The cop told me the reason he came to check me out was because they have caught people trying to bow hunt in the field he visits each night.

The craziest thing about it is that some guy owns the entire wooded tract that he lives in, and no one hunts it (or if they do, they bow hunt because I never hear shots). Somebody is sitting on a deer that most people can only dream of, and he could legally harvest it if he wanted to.

Anyway to find out who owns it? If so all you can do is ask!

"Hey running' buddy what'll say to a twelve pack"

Since you can't hunt he with a bow or gun, do the next best thing a shot him with the old telephoto lense. I saw a guy on a hunting show once that riged a rifle stock to have a camera in it and he hunted onto the season started that way to refine his skills.

If I'm not hunting something I must be dead.

poaching this deer would be absolutely the stupidest idea considering a cop has been watching him.. I dont think that would be a worry. Besides, I have a large property in webb county that I have a pick from.

Didn't mean to stir controversy.

I'll keep you guys posted if I get a picture of him. My guess is that being as old as he reportedly is, he's smarter than the cop gave him credit for and it might be more difficult than I'm thinking it will be.
