I have always wanted to squirrel hunt and in the past we just wandered around and shot them if we saw them. I was wonder what the proper way was to hunt squirrel. Do you stalk, sit, put out a feeder?

Just give them alcohol, and wait until they pass out. Works every time.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

I usually stalk them until I find a place that has serval oak or pecan trees in a group. When I find something like this I will sit and watch for 10 or 15 minutes. Gives them time to forget your there.

Creeping through the woods is still a "proper" method, stinkbelly. Depends on where you are. We just stalk and stop, look, shoot, then go at it again. HWY MAN - that ain't ethical...

My Dad, who was born and raised in Amarillo, told me that the way he hunted squirrels as a kid was to have two people. One would stop. The other would round the tree till he could not see the first. The squirrels would always go to the opposite side of the trunk so the hunter could not see him. When he did that, one or both hunters would get a shot at him. Don't know if it works, cause I never had squirrels to hunt, at least till I couldn't hunt anymore. I would be interested in finding out if it does work. skookumchuck

Sometimes if my Dad and I are hunting together when we are easing through the woods if we spot one that runs and hides on the back side of the tree we will use the method mentioned by Skookumchuck. Mainly we stay close to the creek beds and hunt. Were we hunt the creeks are lined on both sides with big oak and pecan trees, and we slowly work our way down the creek stalking and sitting.

I go out in my backyard and shoot them out of the oaks w/ CCI CB Longs. No noise and kill 'em dead. Rats w/ furry tails!
Thanks and Gig'em

I had a dingo / blue heeler mix that I'd take squirrel hunting. When she'd see a squirrel (and she would usually spot them before I did), she would run around the tree & bark, while I stood still. When the squirrel came back to my side, it would develop a terminal case of lead poisoning, courtesy of a Marlin Model 60. Had her for 17 years, and still miss her (the dog, that is).

I get my CB caps at Carter's in Houston. Used to use BB caps in my single shot Marlin, and they were as quiet as a pellet gun (and only slightly more powerful). Haven't seen any of those in years, though.

CCI still make them, Gander Mnt. in Houston had them in Sept, cost about the same as a 22cal long rifle round, they are more powerful than an air rifle and are still a rifle round and must be handled as such.

How to become a sqirrel hunter! 1st you put 10 marbles in your mouth and everytime you shoot a squirrel you spit out a marble, then when you have lost all your marbles you are a squirrel hunter.

Boy does this topic bring back a flood of childhood memories. Dad always taught me to walk quitely through the woods, if you had a wind/breeze look at every limb coming off the trunk. A squirrel can control every inch of his tail except for the last few inches of hair, the wind would blow that hair/tail past the limb. Once he is spotted then take a stick or rock and chunk it in the opposite side of the tree and make it come to your side. Killed many a squirrel that way. Had an old Mutt (Jumper) that got to where he would go squirreling with me and taught himself to hunt. Wasn't by my training but by repitition only, he would go out ahead of me and would tree a squirrel and bark like crazy, I'd run to where he was and as soon as I would get there he would go to the opposite side of the tree and sit and wag his tail in the leaves and bark. Squirrel would come to my side and pop with the old 22. Had many many bowls of Squirrel and Dumplins growin up. Momma was real good about cooking up my wild game I brought in. Squirrel, Rabbit, Frog legs ETC.

ITs simple get a .22 put a scope on it and get it sighted in real good. Put it dead on at like 20 or 25 yds. Or about the distance to the top of a big oak. Go out and scout for nest during mid day. Look for plenty of food. Acorns and scuch. Then go out in the morning, like first light and tread lightly through the woods. Shoot em in the head to save the meat. Thats where sighting in the scope comes in handy! If your by yourself and the squirell moves to the opposite side of the tree, pick up a stick or rock or whatever is handy and throw it to the other side of the tree. 9 times out of ten the squirell will react to your side of the tree. You can get him them if you can pop a shot. My best luck has come from down in the bottoms. Aim small, miss small

ALWAYS JUST WENT DOWN IN A CREEK BOTTOM WITH LOTS OF PECAN OR OAK TREES AND SAT QUIETLY AND WAITED... IF YOU GET ONE UP A TREE JUST STAND THERE AND WATCH HE WILL POKE HIS HEAD OUT AROUND THE LIMB IN A FEW MINUTES (JUST ENOUGH TO WATCH YOU) HIS EYE IS THE TARGET. WE ALWAYS HUNTED THEM WITH 22LR HP AND IF YOU DIDN'T HIT HIM IN THE HEAD IT WASN'T YOUR SQUIRREL (YOU GIVE IT TO YOUR HUNTING BUDDY) SOME PEOPLE HUNT WITH A SHOTGUN BUT IN MY OPINION 22 IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO.
