Do you guys have any plans on a do it yourself tailgate feeder?

I got a 12v motor(just the motor no housing), and a 5gal barrel. square tubing and some time.

I need ideas on mounting motor to barrel and a plate to keep corn from coming out when I dont want to feed.

Feel free to ask questions if I am unclear.

Pics would be great aswell.

Thanks

RJ

What he actually ended up doing was mounting it to 2x4s which he bolted to the hitch hauler. Works pretty well.

alright this one is complicated, but read carefully.
first, geta 12 V motor, spinner plate, make a housing out of 16guage aluminum, and a 5 gallon bucket. attach housing to the bucket, and then put 12 v motor in housing. then build attachmet to place on the back of a truck, add an on off switch. heres the important part---post on THF and CRaigslist and sell for 40% profit.

then go to store, buy 50lb bag of corn, open a lil bit, open window in truck, drive down where u want corn, and slowly let corn out of the bag while u drive.

Wishful thinking. But a thought all the same.

Does anyone use a 12V motor? It seems that it might empty the 5gallon can awfully fast. Thanks for the pics above. I have all of the parts, just need some ideas. Keepem coming guys

Thanks

Yeah I could buy one, but the price is insane for what you get. I have the truck wired with a toggle switch ready for a custom job. LOL

serously thouhg, ive used homemade and store bought. a 5 gallon bucket will hold 25# of corn, and it should spit it out slow enough for u. i wouldnt go as far to use a 55gallon drum though, if u could find something small and easy to handle, then ur set. if ur like me, u wont put out but around 30-40# at any given hunt. but if ur like my uncle u will put out a cpl hundred #s lol!

40#s would be ideal. I am not married to the 5 gal can idea, it was just one of those cheap metal moultrie feeder cans left over.

if u can find some larger buckets, idk what size they are, but we use to get hydraulic oil in em and stuff like that. they are probably 7 or 8 gallons, would probably work better for u.

I believe they all use 12V motors so that you can plug them into the lighter on the dash or wire them directly into the fuse panel.

I sent a drawing of what I wanted fabricated to a metal shop and they built it for me. 18" X 18" x 18" and then it slopes down about 6" to the bottom where I cut a hole and mounted my motor and spinner plate. I bought an assembled motor that has a 'worm type' sleeve that fits over the motor shaft. I made a frame out of angle iron and it sits in it perfectly and the frame mounts right into the receiver on front of my jeep.

It has a spring below the spinner plate that forces it up tight to the bottom of the spout and when you hit the switch it spins the plate down about 1/2" or so and let corn flow onto the plate. As soon as you stop it, the spring forces the plate back up the 'worm shaft' and tight to the bottom of the feeder. I've probably spread literally 100,000 pounds of corn with this feeder and changed the motor out one time....last weekend as it finally peetered out!

I will never build another one as you can pick up a 50lb TG feeder at Academy for about $100 or a little less! Mine cost almost twice that to make!

My feeder...a 1 lb metal coffee can with a steel handle bolted to it. Since I take the doors off my Jeep while hunting, I set a back of corn in the passenger floorboard and scoop corn into my "feeder". Then I dribble it out or pitch a can or two where I want the deer to stop.

Practice doesn’t make perfect.
Practice makes permanent.

you can rig a really nice one if you have a welding machine

welding machines make stuff like this a breeze, wish i had one

I do not have any pics and the jeep is at the ranch. I purchased it at one of the TTHA shows about 5 years ago. I know the guy who makes them is out of SA but cannot for the life of me remember his name or the name of his company. Sorry
